Well done!

I'm still broody but I think OH has overtaken me in the desperate-for-a-baby stakes.I'm just bored of it now so not overly bothered either way at the minute.
Think the fact that I've got my holiday to look forward to (with lots of booze and non-pregnancy-friendly food on tap!) is the reason for my current attitude!
Good that the shelves actually arrived Lara, not good that you're disappointed with the quality. You won't see much of the tops anyway so I guess that's something. If it does bug you over time you could line them with some nice paper/fabric or paint them to make them even more glamourous.
I started on a little cross stich last night to practice before embarking on a big one.Hope I get faster or my big owl sampler will take a very looooooong time!

Ladies, I'm in a pickle. My new job have asked me to start in three weeks time, so that I can have a weeks training before my predecessor moves on. My notice is four weeks but I have around 7 days holiday to take. But my current work are insisting that I work my full notice and get paid my holiday. I have checked and they are entitled to do this. Obviously they can't physically make me work it and I don't want to start my new role with no-one to train me. What would you do if you were me? I don't really want to leave on bad terms but its more important to start my new place on good terms, if you see what I mean.Barclaycard [STRIKE]£7,296.35[/STRIKE] £6134.99 - MBNA [STRIKE]£4,182.88[/STRIKE] £3267.08 - O/draft [STRIKE]£569.31[/STRIKE] £413.59 - Capital One [STRIKE]£1477.55[/STRIKE] £1451.44Total debt [STRIKE]£12048.54[/STRIKE] £11267.10 6% paid0

Ooh yikes Shrimpy. It's the opposite at my place, they'd much prefer you to take your holidays than pay you for them *rolly eyes* Where have you checked that they're entitled to do this? Is it in your contract?
As far as I was aware from a legal PoV, you don't have to give notice at all and they have to pay you for what you've worked, but they can then not pay you for any accrued holiday (although they still might). Obviously seven days is a lot though and you wouldn't want to lose that. Hmm. Any chance you could take your holidays now, go back for two weeks and then walk out?!
You could try speaking to the CAB or ACAS? Or the employment boards on here?
Why does the new place want you to start in three weeks? Surely they must realise that four weeks' notice is pretty standard?Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
Can't believe your shelves arrived Lara! Don't stress about them, at least you can get your closet finished now, you'll feel great once that's done!
Hi Birdie - eep I'm jealous of your holiday! No sun holiday for me for a whileYay to the cross stitch - I started on the border of my rainbow blanket last night, feeling on an AA roll! (very blurred picture here)

Congrats on the new job, Shrimpy :j I'd just explain the situation to the new job people, that you have 4 weeks notice to work and out of respect to your old(/current) employer you want to see that agreement through. But still put emphasis on how excited you are to start your new job, with some training. Could you do anything along the lines of split days or maybe giving a weekend to it?0

That's a tricky one Shrimpy. I thought your holiday was entitled to count as part of your notice period. The only thing I can suggest is taking a week's leave (for training) in the middle of your notice period. So 3 weeks notice, then 1 weeks holiday (where you go and train with your new employer), then 1 more weeks notice plus payment of outstanding accrued holiday pay? But that leaves your new employer short staffed for a week. Maybe ask on the employment board?
The edging on the shelves will take a while, so I am leaving them until the weekend. But one AA will be completed then!

As am I!
Its because the person is currently doing the role is only there for that week to train me, then she has two weeks holiday then is returning to a new role. Its quite a small business so the plan is to train me before she goes so I can cover her leave.
Work are only being so awkward because so many other people have left and they haven't replaced them *rolly eyed smiley*. I need to check my contract when I get home, the only glimmer of hope I have is that I'm still on probation (it was extended as I was on leave for such a long time) so am hoping there will be some sort of reduced notice period. But I'm doubtful.
Split days would be a good solution but I can't see either side agreeing. Its something to think about though if I can suggest it in a way that would work. I have offered to work longer days here in the run up to leaving but that was refused.
Sorry for the long posts, I really hate confrontation and am rubbish at standing my ground! I feel too wound up to eat though which is good for my diet I guess!

That is a tough one Shrimpy. I think the suggestion of taking a week's leave mid-notice for training is a good one. You can but ask.
ETA: Cross posted so ignore me!
