There's a B&M on the retail park in Coalville, I've only been in once though as you cant access it by bus and so would have to beg OH to take me there :D it's pretty dam good though. There's an Aldi AND a Lidl opposite each other near my college, there is a bus service but its tricky to get to. There's also a Home Bargains in the precinct in Coalville which is on my way home from work and difficult to resist!

However nearest Ikea is either Nottingham or Coventry and the Nottingham one is fifty shades of hell to navigate in and out of :D so one up near Fosse Park would be nice :D

I live near Swindon, in a village about 6 miles away, and work in Cirencester.

In Swindon there are three Aldis, two Lidls, a BM Bargains (which I've never been in), a massive Asda, Poundland, 99p store, Morrisons, Dunelm and all the usual Tesco, Sainsburys, Iceland etc. So Swindon MSE-ers are spoilt for choice. No Home Bargains though, surprisingly.

In Cirencester (where I do most of my shopping, as I work there every day and it's easier than driving into Swindon) we have probably the tidiest Poundland in the country, an array of fantastic charity shops (well to do area = lots of new or almost new designer items for hardly any money), Lidl, Waitrose which is surprisingly good for things like dried pulses and frequently has offers on things like ground coffee and Twinings tea (and the new free coffee offer for cardholders) and a large-ish Tesco on my way home.

Suppose I'm quite lucky really :D

I recommend gutting your house and stacking most of your belongings in one room until the work is completed. That way, as your rooms will be quite empty, when you slam a door it will echo through the entire house. It's probably the only good thing about living on a building site.

We are fortunate to have a Tescos, Morrisons, Asda and Aldi about 3 miles away, and the same goes for a Saturday market. This means that we can pick and choose over items and do quick comparisons - very MSE:)
We still find that one of our local high streets is cheaper and better quality for fruit and veg than any of the above, and the only supermarket we would buy fresh produce from is Lidl (10 miles away).

In Runcorn, there is a scrap store that I use for Brownies and Rainbows. I also use most of the above shops for guiding resources, depending on what we want.

Although St. Helens is a decent size town, I live on the edge, near farmers fields, so I get the best of both worlds :)

What's that in Runcorn? I'm trying to think which one you mean since I live in Runcorn. I live not far from the bridge, I don't get the best of both worlds!:p

We almost got an Aldi, but the NIMBYs didn't like the idea so it never got through planning.

    Interesting.

We got a questionnaire from Aldi, it must be nearly a year ago now, about developing a store on a disused site. Obviously I said yes, yes, yes, but nothing has happened as yet. There were people clearing rubbish from the site about 2-3 month ago, but still no news on a sparkling new Aldi.

Our nearest walkable shops are an expensive Budgen and an even more expensive co-op, the Aldi would be very welcomed. We do have another Co-op, a small Sainsburys a good size Tesco and an Iceland a bus ride away but the decent size Sainsburys, Waitrose, Morrisons and Aldi all need a car to get to, which is fine for us, but not for lots of others.

I wouldn't even know where to look for a Home Bargains, I've never seen one. Although I did see my first Farm Foods last week, it wasn't near home and I can't remember exactly where I was at the time but it'a out there somewhere :o

Oh, we do have an Ikea about 15 mins drive away, I feel truly honoured.

we also have The Range and Duneln [ and huge Primark]
    but no Ikea
i really have never seen the first 2?

  • Woohoo just googled Aldi and there is one 7 miles from me. Will go and check it out at the weekend.

Nearest Home Bargains store is in Canterbury, which is miles away. Not fair :(

Guess you cant have it all and I agree with the poster who said be careful what you wish for. I would just be out there spending more money :D

  • I don't have one anywhere near me.

LOL - out of curiosity .... what distance (miles or time) does everyone think of when using the word "near"?

Just wondering if it differs for those who live in cities and those who are very rural

because I drive, "near" me is within 3 miles or so (but the Co-ops are a lot closer). I live 3 miles from the city centre too. So driving, everything is within about 15 minutes.
