I wonder where you all live? I'm in St. Helens and we have two Aldi, two Home Bargain, two Morrisons, Asda, B&M, Dunelm Mill, The Range (opened last month :D). We also have Poundland, two Poundworld, Poundstretcher, 99p store, another pound shop whose name I don't know. We also have Wilkinsons.

Nearby in Widnes is a much larger B&M, as well as Wilkinsons with easy parking. Warrington has Ikea. Both are within ten or fifteen minutes drive from where I live.

We don't have Sainsbury's, but a new one has opened in Warrington. I'm not sure whether it is this side or the far side though.

In Runcorn, there is a scrap store that I use for Brownies and Rainbows. I also use most of the above shops for guiding resources, depending on what we want.

Although St. Helens is a decent size town, I live on the edge, near farmers fields, so I get the best of both worlds :)

Sainsburys in Warrington is OK (BH works about 200 yds away) next nearest one for us is in bandit country (Wigan) (ps live in St Helens as well)

'near' = able to get to on my mobility scooter without my toes freezing - 30 minutes each way to tesco is OK in the summer but no longer counts as 'near' during cold weather LOL (for anyone who's not tried it just think about sitting outside in the wind for half an hour and yes, you look daft in leathers when you're doing 8mph let alone 4mph as smaller scooters do) so that includes Co-op x3 and Iceland.

not 'near' is anything I have to go to the next town for - 30 minutes (or more) each way by car - widens my choice to Lidl, Sainsbury, M&S and a pound shop

distant is anything further than the next town cos that's at least an hour's travelling each way

we have most of those mentioned in my town.
    :footie:
  • because I drive, "near" me is within 3 miles or so (but the Co-ops are a lot closer). I live 3 miles from the city centre too. So driving, everything is within about 15 minutes.

Thanks - really interesting to see what others think when talking about it!

For me, "near" are the towns closest to me: there are 3 - typically in 3 different directions & all between 7 and 8 miles! (There is an Aldi in one of them). Times vary (one is a very twisty single track road with passing places and the others are main roads) from 15 mins to 20 mins.

Next batch of shops are around 20 miles / 30 min journey and are done maybe once a month - and widens the choice to include Li*dl, Farm*foods and £land.

HB is unfortunately "far" as it's at the shopping centre that's around 30 miles and 40 mins travelling time.... probably go there every 3 months or so as there's also a PAH there.

LOL - out of curiosity .... what distance (miles or time) does everyone think of when using the word "near"?

You're right, it is very subjective!

I suppose I'd say 15 minutes away by car is actually "near".
Most of the assortment of shops mentioned is at least "accessible" to me, rather than actually "near".

However, Aldi and Home Bargains are at least 2 hours away or more, I think, so I consider them to be nowhere near me.

    Small Co-op 2 miles, a small Sainsbury 10 miles, Tesco 20 miles, B&M 80 miles, Morrisons 25 miles.

This is due to council planners wanting to keep the local High Streets "vibrant" and refusing planning permission for large stores nearby. Result - either a long car journey or ordering on the internet. I don't think having a decent supermarket nearby would make an iota of difference to the business our independent shops get.

Near for me is the small towns within say 6-8 miles. Also near for a big shop are the ones in cirpties an hour or so away. There is a bigger city I still think of as near but in reality it's an hour and a half, which pushes just outside 'popping' distance for me.

My dh works in London, which I consider nearer than closer places, because it's easier to get to and to get back from.

Good point, it's actually easier and cheaper for me to get to the nearest city (not London) than it is the nearest town. Only 25 minutes and £10 by accessible public transport instead of 30+ minutes by car (when I'm able to drive) or £25 in a taxi or paying a carer to get my manual chair on a bus and push me round.

Move to a less affluent area.

You may end up living in a dump, but at least there'll be an Aldi and Home Bargains there:rotfl:
