Not true unfortunately, I'm posting from one of the worst areas of unemployment and highest poverty and we have neither :rotfl:

Live about 150 yards away from my local home bargains, iceland and the local market, about 300 yards away from morrisons. Got a lidl and aldi always look an organised mess in there don't use them much as they aren't as cheap as they used to be.

But HB seem to always get some cheap stuff in there.

We've got the lot up here, although I've never seen a Waitrose though. The big IKEA is about 30 mins by car, (unless you get stuck on the Western Bypass ) just near the Metrocentre. Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys and Aldi are about 10 mins, and the big Asda is about 15 mins by car. B & M, Co op, Herons, Wilkinsons, Iceland, Home Bargains, small Asda, and 3 £ shops are 5 mins by car, 10/15 by foot. And M & S is in town, which is 25 mins on the Metro.

I could do with an Asda a bit closer as well, and a Morrisons. I prefer the bathroom door for slamming purposes, partition walls and all those hard surfaces made a very satisfying noise - to the point that the kids refer to bathroom visits as 'going for a slam'.

Reminds me of when my mum finally (after umpteen goes) passed her driving test, turned to the examiner, almost kissed him and shrieked, "You don't know what this means to me... I can go to ASDA!"

(Before that I'd had to get the bus into the grotty little Tesco Express in the town centre every week)

We've got most stuff near enough - I can't really complain (apart from that they're axing our local bus route - mutter mutter mutter) including the Ikea none of you seem to be able to get in and out of - seriously if you want a hard one to drive in and out of - try the Gateshead one!

They have been changing our old MFI into a Home Bargains since the Summer. I've never been to one and just expect it to be like the 99p or Poundland Shops.
It would be nice to have a Lidl nearer though.

I would love to save a fortune. It has to be on healthy stuff though and not on empty calories. Could someone show me the way?

It has been pointed out to me (since joining) my shopping list is far from ideal and to cut my budget I need to cut the empty calories this is where my savings usually lie.

What healthy stuff do you regularly buy from these places that save you a fortune. This is how I can reduce my budget further.

    Thank-you.

As always cutting back not cutting out.
  • I have started buying a lot more dried pulses and beans - lentils, chick peas, kidney beans, etc. Just put a cupful in a saucepan to soak in water overnight, and then chuck that into a stew, casserole, bolognese, etc when you're cooking them.

Et voila - extra protein and trace nutrients.
  • If you cook from scratch I'm not sure where any of these "empty calories" may be coming from.

Have you popped over to the Old Style part of the forum? Plenty of keen cooks and shoppers over there, and the Grocery Challenge thread is especially interesting if you're a skint saddo like me

I've got 2 Aldi within 4.39m of my house. :shhh: </runs>

    Metres or miles?

There are 2 aldis reasonably near me, I have been to neither. There are also 2 lidls again not too far. One is nice and one is grotty.

B&M opened quite near recently, I keep meaning to go and keep forgetting!
