What would you complain about? The "till lady" enforcing the id policy? That's her job! At the end of the day how can the staff know your friend's age or that she will not be consuming the alcohol? They are not going to take a gamble on your word when their job is at stake. I can understand it is frustrating for you but it is frustrating for the staff too. As a shop assistant, I live in fear that someone will kick off when I ask for their id and fear that if I don't I will lose my job. If I did accidentally sell alcohol to someone under age I could lose my job, be prosecuted, fined and face the prospect of trying to find a new job with a criminal record.

    Here is some more information:
Budgens shop assistant in Chingford fined for selling alcohol to underage teenager

“What happens if a sale is made?
The retailer and/or the person making the sale could be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000 in most cases and £2,500 for aerosols. There is also the possibility of up to 6 months imprisonment and up to 2 years for lottery tickets.”
    http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/kent/documents/KCAP%20retailers%20pack%20Mar10.pdf

Think about the pressure shop staff are under.

Anyone spot the flaw in the law? There are sanctions against the store, the store manager and the employee, but the underage scrote attempting to buy the drink escapes scot free.

Maybe whatever laws apply to the stores should also apply to the underage drinker?

That's what i've always thought! A fixed fine wouldn't work because their parents would pay. I think a good idea would be to withhold the money they were using to pay - it's money they have so we know their parents wouldn't have to foot the bill. Then they have a set time, say seven days, to come back with valid ID to get their money back, and if they don't the money goes to charity/reducing the country's deficit. I know this probably isn't a practical solution but there should be some punishment for the person actually attempting to break the law, not the poor unfortunate person who gets caught out by them.

The drivers are delivering goods already purchased. If they followed the rule of a purchaser not having anyone in their house who appeared to be under 25 at the time they delivered the purchase, there would be no point in any parent of youngish children daring to order a box of liquer chocolates or tub of brandy sauce.

Until the delivery is completed the sale has not finished, this includes delivery by courier etc. if it involves alcohol you are not allowed by law to deliver it to an under age person.

It is not that someone can not be under age in the house, just like an under age person can be at the till as long as the person selling does not think the alcohol is been bought for the under age person.

Feel free to actually find out what the law is before commenting.

Ah the teaspoons, I was at work on the tills at asda, scanning things away, scanned teaspoons and an 'check age' notice came up. I was about to look up at the person to see if they looked over 25 until I realised it was teaspoons. I told the person the till was asking that it wanted me to ID them for teaspoons! I didn't ID them though, they looked old enough anyway!

Maybe it's to stop heroin users lol. Or it got confused with the knives and forks...
  • The teaspoons thing confused me as well lol. Our tills used to do it for grenadine (sp might b wrong sorry!)

Grenadine is a syrup used in cocktails mostly but it can also be used in ice-creams etc. It has no alcohol in it. I tried asking the manager why it comes up and he couldnt give me an answer. Anyone got any idea why?

Provably because it's usually stocked with Beers, wines and spirits, and presumably if the till registers it as being part of that department, it automatically asks for ID

Nice idea, but if I was refused service and they confiscated my money, I'd be stuck, as I have no "valid" ID. I'm not paying for a driving license or passport that I won't use, and now provisionals are being phased out, and a lot of places are also not accepting the "Pass" cards, I'd need to buy a passport to prove my age satisfactorily.
    I am 23 next week.
If I'm refused service, I just deal with it and get it at my local shop later where I'm known, no dramas. But if they started taking my money? Oh hell no.

Here's what I don't understand - you have to be 18 to buy alcohol, yes?
I was Id'd, didn't have driving licence etc on me, so showed a credit card. Y'know, that you can only get when you're 18? And that was fine, but because it didn't prove I was over 25 they refused me.

What's the "over 25" bit got to do with legally buying it???

The ID you show needs to be Photo ID therefore a credit card is not acceptable. It could be anyones credit card. That was probably the main reason they refused it not because it didn't prove you were over 25.
