I absolutely hated when customers would have a barney about this - we're told what to do by management. We didn't make the rules.
Don't have a pop at the staff, it's not their fault.0 -
One of my mates got caught out on this challenge 25 policy he served someone they had sent in that must have looked at least in there twenties, this can lead to a whole load of misery for the shop worker never mind the customer, the policy is the customer must look over 25 in your opinion or be able to verify that he/she is over 18 the manager must back you up on this as you are safeguarding your job. The problem with customers going through self scan machines is adults bring there shopping over and let there kids scan the alcohol etc which is a brainless thing to do as there are security cameras etc on there so the shop worker has to assume it,s for the kid/teenager and then turn down the sale, the customers have no comprehension of what the poor staff member has to go through if they fail this challenge 25 policy which is now in force for tobacco/alcohol/knives/DVDs etc and they make a big song and dance call the manager etc but they are not the person who gets a massive fine or the sack all they are bothered about is there next fag or drink.0

As a regular traveller to the US,it is the norm there to be asked for proof of age with ID when buying booze in a supermarket or Liquor store.
I had to show ID last month and I am 45,last year my husband was kept waiting in a supermarket for 10 minutes so the manager could verify he was 42 when buying 6 bottles of Bud.
So it is not just here that it may seem an over-reaction.0 -
I don't know why people moan about being asked for id whether it's challenge 21 or 25 nowadays you can't tell the age of people and if you get it wrong you could get a hefty fine so all the pressure is put on the shop assistant to get it right and personally if it's there job on the line i don't blame them they have every right to ask the person whatever there age may be0
