Asda`s Think 25 policy - VENT

I was shopping in ASDA today for a few bits and bobs ,with my 28yo friend, who happend to be in town with me and was going to join me for tea.

I got a few bits and then realised I`m near the £30 mark and have a coupon for £5 off £40 , so I added 3 bottles of wine to make up the amount, that I would stash away for xmas.

All was fine until we got to the till, and half way through packing the shoppings they got to the wine....

The till lady asked if I have ID, which is quite flattering, and I did. But then she wanted to see ID for my friend , who was helping me pack the bags. She actually didn`t have any with her , so the till assistant called the manager over, who said it`s their policy that we should both be ID`ed because we are shopping together. I explained that I only purchased the wine to make it over £40 , and should I be on my own I wouldn`t be declined it. He just shrugged and said as he has seen us together he can`t ignore that she can`t prove her age. I tried to explain the wine is for me , the shoppings are mine, the voucher is mine, the card is mine and she is just WITH me , but they wouldn`t have any of it.

They`ve not budged so I had to leave my shopping, as I was so wound up and didn`t feel like giving them my money after all of that, but now I`m home I just can`t believe how ridiculous it all was.

I think normally I would put up more of a fight but I was just so shell shocked by all of it that I just gave up.

I suppose my question is , would you complain about this? I didn`t take the name of the till assistant or indeed the till number, but I feel really hard done by the fact I spent 1hr in their shop and had to leave empty handed when I was prepared to buy and pay for things.

Has this happen to anyone else?

Yep really annoying and really silly BUT, don't have a go at the till assistant, he/she will only be carrying out what they have been told or risk losing their job this close to Xmas

    ditto to buellguy.

The supermarkets are scared of eg panarama making a 17 year old look older than 25 with the next day headline of "ASDA fueling under age binge drinking"

this is the way society has gone regarding drink.

It is ridiculous in my opinion. When I worked on checkouts at Asda I only ID'd the person paying, I asked who was paying and asked if they had ID. Unless they obviously looked very young. If the person I ID'd was late 20s, 30s and their friend looked a similar age, I wouldn't ID them.

I use to go shopping with my mum, did a big monthly shop of around £100-£150, in that was alcohol, they never asked me for ID as my mum paid for it (I was 16/17 at the time).

There should be some room for common sense.

So parents accompanied by children can't buy booze?

Exactly what I do! Im 28, and all my pals are old enough to drink, but some look young so I just tell them to stay outside because it isnt worth the bother of arguing.

My local Asda does use common sense most of the time though... A few weeks back I didnt have my ID and sods law, got ID'd. The Mrs had hers, showed it and that was that, even though I was paying it was fine.

For every decent parent, there are probably a handful who will happily let them take the booze and cause mayhem as long as they don't do it at home.

  • Don't complain about the assistant they are only following the store policy. I know it's annoying sometimes but i suppose it depends on where you live in the country. For example Newquay has real trouble with under age people coming down on holiday and attempting to buy booze. They seem to think that it's ok if one of them is old enough and has ID. So the policy is to ID all of them, in order to prevent the issues Newquay has had in the past with under age drinking and general disorder.

There was this chap in the Daily Wail who was unable to prove he was over 18 so was refused his purchase. However the thing he was buying was a chocolate pudding, and the staff would not sell it to him as they though he might burn himself on it when he cooked it!

You could not make this stuff up:

We had Tescos deliver to our home, and initially the driver would not let us have the wine we ordered as he saw our children in the house. He did change his mind when I told him to take the lot back.
