I never sign the till receipt before I receive the cash, usually it's not a problem for the cashiers either. Only a couple of times that supermarkets cashiers insisted I should sigh it before they would open the till drawers, I just refused and simply replied "why should I sigh for something that I have not yet received?"

All in all, I think this is a very good point, supermarkets should change their cashback handling procedure.

when i worked at sainsburys a few years ago we were told to ask teh customer to initial the cashback then give them their cashback and we had to do it in that order

Couldn't a cashier quiet rightly say "why should I give you cashback before you've signed to say you have it"!

Technically both would have to be done simultaneously if signing things at the right time is really that important to people.

I have just forgotten to collect cash from the cash-back service at a a self-service till at my local ASDA's. Within seconds I realised my mistake, on returning to the till there was no cash lying in the slot!! When I queried this I was told there was nothing ASDA could do as it was my responsibility and someone else must have picked up the cash (very quickly!!). Although there is CCTV they couldn't use this due to data protection issues??? I was then informed that I wouldn't believe how many people forget to collect their cash from these machines. If this is a common problem whilst using these machines - I would query why hasn't something been done to rectify this. For example hitting another button on the touch screen to indicate money has been collected!! Do you have any advice?

It's not a design fault of the till...it's a design fault of forgetful humans.
  • Am I missing something here ? At the risk of being flamed for daring to disagree with Martin I don't see the issue. The supermarket did not 'steal' your money (not in any legal or dictionary sense of the word) a mistake was made and the person receiving the cash is MORE to blame than the supermarket ... you signed it ... you should check before you leave ... and, before you ask, yes I f****d up in the past on the one and only occasion I asked for cashback (hence why I have never done it since) ... oh, and when I went back in (cap in hand) Tescos sorted it out very politely and efficiently.

If I go into a bank I have to sign my cheque before I get cash. If I want to make a withdrawal I have to sign the slip before I get my cash. If I apply for a mortgage I have to sign my life away (in triplicate) before I get any money.

I think there is a phrase involving the words 'mountains' and 'molehills' that comes to mind.

I agree. It takes about 30 seconds to chill out and think instead of rushing off to get to the car a whole .5 seconds sooner.

looks like the user you quoted has been chilling out, for some 4 odd years.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

    They are talking nonsense.

If the money was stolen, and ASDA refuse to give information that may lead to the apprehension of the thief, they have themselves committed an offence.

From the supermarket point of view I think Traf has hit the nail on the head by saying it is a security issue. It might also all be down to procedures that may be insisted on by supermarkets insurance companies. I have no first hand knowledge of this though.

From a cashiers point of view they handle a new transaction every few minutes. Probably 95+% of these are straight forward and then comes one were there is a cashback. The cashier is just going through the motions and, like the customer, the mind is focused on the standard side of things: ring stuff through; swipe rewards card, swipe cashback card; wait for till receipt; wait for card docket; get docket signed; open drawer; put in signed docket; close drawer; wait for money off vouchers; hand receipt and vouchers to customer... and they forget...mistakes happen. I still say the onus is on the customer to be more vigilant after all it is their money.

Remember that this is a service offered by the supermarkets and if it becomes too awkward to administer, results in too many complaints or becomes a security risk then (as has happened in the past) it will be withdrawn. I was going to add that supermarkets are not banks ... but nowadays most of them do appear to be ;D

They dont do cashback out of the goodness of their hearts , it cuts down on the amount of cash they have to hold , and saves on bank charges
