    At our store we have had customers, whom after asking for cashback swear on the holy bible that they didnt - a lot of our old dear customers are religious. So in response to cashiers being called thiefs and made to look stupid, i tell all my cashiers to ask the customer to initial the cash back when they are signing for the sale to say that they have ASKED for cashback, not recieved it , but asked for it. Then once that part of the reciept has been put in the till, i.e. the one with the signatures on, the cashiers reach out the cashback, give it to the customer, then the cashiers put THEIR initials on the reciept that the customer takes home. Just to clarify, we ask the customers to initial that they have ASKED for cashback, we give it to then, then WE sign to say that we have give it to then, so if a customer says that they havent recieved it, regardless of if they have signed or not we will know if they have. Plus the fact that the cashiers have to sign prompts them to give it out.

    Just to add we had a 'gentleman' in store who refused to sign for cashback- in the past someone refused to sign, we gave them the money then they said - sign for what cashback!! - so if people refuse to initial we dont give them the cashback! And yes you can quote that my store does that!


    This sounds like a good system. Really the customer should have to acknowledge both that they have requested and received cashback - it would be better if the store copy of the receipt had a "Cashback requested (customer)" box, and the customer copy had "Cashback given (cashier)" and "Cashback received (customer)" boxes to initial. If the "requested" box on the store receipt is initialled then the store knows that the customer actually did ask for cashback (otherwise a dodgy cashier could enter cashback without the customer's consent then keep the money themselves). And if both parties initial the customer's receipt then there's no disputing the fact that the customer was given, and took, their cashback.

    After Chip and PIN, the customer should just have to acknowledge before they enter their PIN that they did request cashback and both parties should initial the customer's copy of the receipt.

    ::)I work on the checkouts (for my sins). Firstly, I ALWAYS hand the cash to the person before they acknowledge it on THEIR copy of the receipt. Secondly, they are asked to initial THEIR copy because in the past unsavoury people have come back to say they didn't receive their cashback. Which is why we now adopt the policy of asking them to initial THEIR copy. There really is no ulterior, sinister motive to this. WE ARE HUMAN AS WELL YOU KNOW! WE CAN MAKE MISTAKES.

    Until they hand the money over it's theirs. When you have taken it from the cashier it's yours. You can't be responsible for something you haven't yet received!

    The dual signature way seems like the only way. Or not doing cashback at the tills but at the customer service desk or kiosk if there is one. We know that stress levels increase when we get to the checkout and it is unfair of them to offer this service in this environment.

    I bet they don't give your money to charity when you forget it.

  • Have noticed in marks and spencers the majority of staff do actually ask you to initial your receipt after they have given you your cash. What ashame the majority of other stores aren't following!

    Like so many others I can see both sides of the arguement.

    I've never been asked for a 2nd signature, only ever my initials which to me has always seemed pointless as anyone can do that.

    I was actually asked to inital my receipt the other day after a chip & pin transaction but I never really thought about it until now.
