Tax Codes

Dazed_and_confused wrote: »Having re-read this whole thread though I'm even more convinced that you are under a misapprehension about a further tax refund. Your OH has obviously earned enough in the last tax year to pay tax at the basic rate, which was 20%. The late payments he received both had 20% tax deducted, via either the BR or 0T code, so I don't see what more is now due back after the change in tax code was made for his current job.
Previous figures given from all employments plus pension suggested that a refund of around £628 was due. HMRC apparently said just less than £700. The OP's husband has been given a refund from current employer, but only of overpaid tax from that employment as opposed to a full refund of overpaid tax in previous employment.
I would say that another £120 approximately is due (although HMRC seem to suggest around £200).
However both P60 from employer and pension company are needed along with P45s.0 -
Thanks jem16, fingers crossed. Its upto the powers that be! think I will ask for a breakdown of their caluclations though in their reply, would HMRC usually provide this if asked?0

They should do.
Once you have both P60s plus the P45s, post the figures and we can make sure.0 -
Will do, thank you.0

Hi I have had a new tax code through 944L or similar. Husbands code last year 814L (washes uniform) no new code received. He is weekly paid and still on the same code. I would have thought this would have altered. Whom should he speak to, his employer? Thanks0

If you're on an L code and nothing else changes then an individual code isn't issued for the new tax year, the employer gets a separate instruction to add a specific amount to all L codes where an individual notification hasn't been issued.
This is called a P9X, extract below
What you need to do before 6 April 2013
Employees without a new tax code
Carry forward the authorised tax code from the 2012–13 payroll record to the 2013–14 payroll record, but if you have received a 2012–13 tax code on a form P6 too late to use in 2012–13 carry forward this code instead.
Add 134 to any tax code ending in L, for example 810L becomes 944L
Do not copy or carry over any ‘week 1’ or ‘month 1’ markings.
The payroll records for these employees are now ready for the new tax year.
I think he needs to check final payslip in 2012:13 and a ausli from 2013:14 and if uplift not applied he should ask his employer why?0 -
Thanks for that he will ask at work because definitely not changed it yet. I assume they will make any adjustment and what he is owed will be put in weekly wage? Thanks again0

Hi jem16
We have today received the P60 from the Royal Navy Pension.
I have totalled everything:
Gross earnings from both jobs from April 2012 - 2013 £14667
Total tax paid April 2012 - 2013 £1715
Total earning from pension £6864.83
Tax paid on pension £1372.80
Fingers crossed some kind of refund is due for overpayment of tax.
Also he has had some really bad news, due to his new firm getting enough work in he was laid off on Friday after only 6 months. HMRC split his new personal allowance between this job and pension, just wondering what he should do now, should he try and get it all allocated against the pension. His new pension from 8/4/2013 is £7042.92, or should we just leave it as it is and hope something comes along very soon.
As always I`m very grateful for help and advice.0 -

Ok total of £21531.83. Tax due on that should be £2686.37.
Tax paid was £3087.80. That would make the refund £401.43 provided all of your figures are correct. Also he has had some really bad news, due to his new firm getting enough work in he was laid off on Friday after only 6 months. Is he likely to get a new job soon? If not I would probably ask for his code to be allocated solely to the pension.0 -

Are you sure you've included everything in your 2012:13 figures, £14667 seems quite low for the 3 jobs?
Reading back over the thread your OH had 4 sources of income last year,
Job 1 (original long time employment)
Job 2 (new post at original company)
Job 3 (totally new job now about to end)
Navy Pension
Can you post up the individual figures you have calculated for each job as the total you have given looks quite low given the previous information you have posted.
From your previous posts it looks as though the figures would be in the region of,
Job 1 Pay £5637 Tax £717.60
Job 2 Pay £4770 Tax £817.40
What isn't as clear is the P60 Pay and Tax in this Employment figures from the Job 3 P60.0
