We didn`t need to ring HMRC a refund of £238.80 turned up in the post yesterday. With a note that says calculation of this amount will be sent out seperately (surely they needed this calculation to work out the refund so am a bit baffled as to why it didn`t come together).
I think we were hoping for a little bit more, but can`t check anything until we get their figures.0 -

The figures would be handy but from earlier posts we were talking about £120 - HMRC thought about £200 so £238 is pretty close to what HMRC told you.0 -

That seems to be quite normal nowadays. In my days as a taxman we did the calculation and it went in the same envelope as the cheque. Today it is perfectly feasible that the calculation could be posted from Belfast, the cheque posted from Glasgow and you live in Truro. Whichever arrives first on your doorstep seems to be pot luck but, from your point of view, you can’t do anything until the calculation arrives.0 -
Thank you both, I`ll post the calculation as soon as it arrives. The refund was made by cheque wondering if we should bank it before the calulation arrives? Thanks0

Oh definitely bank it, but you might want to not spend it all immediately!Signature removed for peace of mind0

Thanks, wasn`t sure what to do until we know how they `arrived at the refund figure`. Wouldn`t spend it until 100% sure everything is ok.0

We have received the calculation from HMRC regarding the refund of £238.80:
PAYE Income 2012/2013 £20866 Tax paid £2775.00
Flat Rate Job Expense £80
Total income after taking away deductions £20786
Personal allowance £8105
Income tax is chargeable on this amount £12681
Tax on £12861 is:
Basic rate at 20% £12681 = £2536.20
Tax chargeable = £2536.20
Tax overpaid £238.80
Thank you.0 -

Provided you can confirm that this was his paid income and tax from all of those payslips, all I can say is that HMRC's calculations are correct.0
