I went to the Halifax today and opened their reward account-£100 just for changing over + £5 a month. Also opened an online saver and put a tenner in there to keep it ticking over 'til the end of the month when £80 will go in. I've been debt free one week and already saved over £300 yay me!

(edit) now £401 as transferred £70 into savings!

Wonderful that this thread is so fast moving. Some great posts. I'm just hoping that you will all still be with us in months later in the year.

Bessiebooboo Pleased to hear you've a new job. Well done.

Canucksfan Congrats on your new baby.

Carolinerunner Well done on the decision-making process. Sounds like you've done the right thing. For me, budgeting & saving isn't about 'doing without', but more about understanding what are the priority things and making those happen.

Allie Sorry to hear about your car. I too have been following OS threads, doing cupboard inventory, set up budget spreadsheet. We must have been similarly inspired. :)

Alja & lbnblbnb I'm going to explore pinterest. Sounds likes a great mags alternative.

I''ve made a great start to this month. All due to the piggy banking I set up in January 2012. I put away sums every month last year towards bills and xmas spending & due to savings made throughout the year (and great use of comparison sites for my car & house insurance due 1 Jan) I've actually started this year with savings already in my piggy banks. I think someone in this thread has already mentioned the benefit of 'pay yourself first' process. So bearing that in mind I've already moved £1250 over into my 2013 savings account & hopefully it will remain intact to be declared at the end of this month as my January savings. That would set me off to a great start with 15% of my year's target saved in first month. Although I anticipate following months won't be quite so good.
  • Hi all,

Can I join again this year? I was one of the one's who dropped out last year, I got about half way through then started a new job and really fell off the saving wagon. However, I did manage to pay off all my debts and I'm back to definitely have a good shot at the £12,000 this year. Reading the thread is really motivating - I just need to keep it up this year!!

Well done on becoming debt free - great achievement. :T Now you can look forwards to getting to grips with savings.

Went to pay in another £60 today but there were no parking spaces so will be done tomorrow when am near to a different branch and there is a car park next door.
So from tomorrow savings will be-

    £278.76/£3000 - 9.2%
    MARCH £62.38/250

As for me, I'm struggling alot with the M.E and the stairs to our flat (we live in a first floor flat but have our own door to outside and then stairs to our flat if that makes sense?) I refuse to have a stairlift put in. I'm only 26!

That really sucks, I know it's not the same but I have fibromyalgia (it's very mild at the moment thankfully) so I also struggle with stairs as well. At 22, I get people tutting behind me because I'm so slow. :rotfl: I tried a stairlift once, it was so disconcerting.

I got confirmation today, my new ISA (first one ever!) is open!

20% there. But it's pretty unlikely I will get this much in one go again this year. I'm hoping for £500 saved per month average this year but...
  • Some of you are doing fantastic already, congrats on becoming debt free, great way to start the year!!

I get paid on Friday and I will be transferring £500 to the Emergency fund savings and £500 to the mortgage pay-off. I will also be transferring £250 to the heating oil/Christmas/holiday fund but I don't think that counts as it will be gone before the end of 2013, right?
So will update spreadsheet once done.
