Just got BT Infinity for nowt extra

Options
Hi all,

I'm a BT unlimited broadband customer, who also only pays a discounted rate for it. Only £13.50 a mth.

Out of the blue, I got a letter from BT today, stating that as my area was now Infinity (fibre) enabled, they would give it to me for absolutely not a penny extra, and without an contract extension, either. All I had to do was quote the promo-code at the bottom of the letter.

So I rang them up and it was true! So BT Infinity here we come! 57Mbps as compared to 6.5. Lovely!

So keep your eyes peeled, BT folks...

Got a similar letter although mine implies there is no choice - "you vill have Infinity Mr Keystone!!" But I've no double 13A socket near my phone master socket which the Infinity box needs. Easier to move the master socket than create a spur but they are insisting they want £ 130 to do that and won't bend from that charge. So I've asked them to consider how they can insist on me having Infinity and then charging me for a very simple configuration change to faciltate me having it. (Its bringing the drop wire into my little office on the first floor rather than into the hall immediately below since you asked) Funny they don't currently have an answer but are going away to consult. Yes I know thats OR rather than the Broadband people but thats their problem not mine.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I explained that my Master socket is downstairs, but all my PC eqpt and electrics are upstairs, and they said no problem, they'll just put that on the engineers job-sheet and he'll do that too, by running a DSL cable from the Master Socket to the eqpt upstairs.

Could your problem be solved via the solution above?

Unfortunately no. The master socket is in the corner. Front door on one side, stairs on the other and engineered wood floor underneath. So a highly tortuous route surface mounted solution. Don't want that thanks. I only asked them to bring the drop wire into the house 8 or 9 feet further up in a straight line vertically - don't even have to move it. Just ease to one side, drill hole, trim large lump of end of drop wire, poke wire through hole and connect to new socket. Thats far too difficult apparently without me coughing up 130 notes. Their problem is that their engineer can run the DSL cable but an OR man has to do the drop wire/master socket. So they can absorb the cost of the DSL cable running but not the bill from OR - apparently.

    Cheers

Ah, so your situation is unusual, and you do require/want extra work done. Though I have no idea what 'engineered flooring' is or what an 'OR man' is, either. But both sound expensive, lol.

...AFAIA BT Open Reach are employing contractors in a lot of areas to do basic fibre installations because they are cheaper.....but the movement of the master socket itself has to be carried out by one of their own (expensive) employees!!

Annoyingly they would have no idea if I did it myself (now theres a thought) because there is no rerouting nor additional cable required - its one hole in the wall, a shortened cable, move the box upstairs and reconnect before disposing of the evidence!

    20 minutes max.

Engineered wood floor in the hallway and I'm not tearing that up either for a DSL cable or a spur. Open Reach is part of BT.

That is indeed a thought. And they don't keep records as to where your master-socket is located. lol ;)
