I have a friend running Debian who uses Wine, and its quite amazing how well he's got Windows games to run. He tells me they run faster than they did on Windows....which seems bizarre.
It's also odd that he now gets explorer.exe crashes on Linux
A bit more support from non-free software developers (I'm sure Linux users are prepared to pay for video/audio editing software in their businesses) and a slightly more fuller-featured install and Linux could improve its user base a lot I think.
Simple things like mp3s working immediately after install, makes all the difference. I know this is a licensing problem with codecs, but even if it just provided a page of links of information on how to install it - that put you vaguely in the right direction....
...or if there was some software that was licensed but still free - something highly sponsored by another company - the equivalent of Windows' Winamp.
Considering AOL's dislike of Windows standard software (how it never liked using the IE browser or TCP/IP), I'm surprised they don't have official Linux/Mac ports of Winamp.
Plus it would help if you could get laptops either preinstalled with Linux, or without an operating system at all. I know you can, but in most cases theres no benefit at all.
Reportedly Acer will only remove Windows if you pay the shipping to/from their factory to do it (at a cost of nearly £50 to you), while suppliers selling laptops without Windows seem to be costing more than the equivalent ones that do - so it's cheaper to buy a laptop with Windows and just not use it.
I'm not sure how long Dell will keep up this thing of just blindly posting cheques to people who say they're not using Windows, and HP are already trying to say they can't support you if you don't use the supplied OS.0 -
