New version is out today. Some improvements include:

- New installer and partitioning tool.
- "Windows migration" services.
- Networking improvements (NetworkManager is now included)
- 3D Desktop (Compiz)
- Download needed codecs feature (rather than getting them yourself)
- XOrg 7.2
- Beagle desktop search
- New artwork

I'd maybe leave getting it from a server. Everywhere is getting hammered at the moment. Via a torrent is probably the best way.

Oh and here's an upgrade guide if you have 6.06/6.10:

Actually hold off for a few hours, or make sure you check where you are getting the download from. Some places still have the RC, and not the final release. Probably best to wait later in the day when they make the official announcement.

Yeah you should be able to update. The above guide should show the steps needed.

I just finished using it as a Live CD

Ready for only my second ever Linux installation :j

Just need to figure out how to make the acpi=off that I always have to put in to make the Live CD work permanent for the install.

    On the subject of Ubuntu.
I'm a long-standing Windows user who wanders into Linux for a look every now and then.

I've learnt a very little amount about changing things in Linux (and I still have to lookup the commands everytime), and the most frustrating thing for me in previous versions of Kubuntu has been:
    - it doesn't support mp3s, mpeg2, wmv, quicktime, or seemingly any normal media formats used on the web, after install. Much as some Linux distributions would like to pretend, .ogg files are really not a current popular filetype.
As a newbie, its not so easy for me to work out how to get mpeg2 files to play, when all the software is installed but I have no idea where to find codecs.
I've wound up downloading and installing VLC before, but the mpeg video playback was absolutely dire - not smooth at all.
I think I installed a third or forth music player which included some codecs, so the mp3 files would then play.

Sounds from the new feature list like the codec problem has been resolved. I may have to check it out again.

Also - do you Ubuntu users know if trying to use Kubuntu is instantly making life more difficult for myself?
When I come across problems, there seems to be a lot more support for Ubuntu than Kubuntu, but I like the KDE interface because it feels more like what I'm used to on Windows. I know they're kinda the same with different front ends, but sometimes commands are different, software supplied with them is different..etc

You can load all the codecs you need by installing automatix2 from https://www.getautomatix.com...also realplayer, adobe reader, skype, google picasa, java and many other 'essential' applications.
    It's a 1click install for Kubuntu

Personally, I give Linux a try now and then, but then I give up. I have to admit I am a Windows person, but I find that Linux is harder to use than Windows. Whilst they've made the installation as easy as Windows, after that I find doing things like installing drivers and things difficult to do.

Maybe I just need more training, but the Linux mags are for die-hard Linux people and don't have easy how-to-do columns like Windows mags have.

Remember, kids: Linux is only for intelligent people. The rest of you should stay away.
