Also have a look at Linux Mint, it's a "full codec" release of Ubuntu and should give you a lot of Windows features straight out of the box, so to speak!0

Why settle for an inferior operating system though0 -

Thats the sort of cr4p that makes people think all Linux users hate all large businesses, never leave the house, and only have 'friends' on IRC.0 -
Personally, I give Linux a try now and then, but then I give up. I have to admit I am a Windows person, but I find that Linux is harder to use than Windows. Whilst they've made the installation as easy as Windows, after that I find doing things like installing drivers and things difficult to do.
Maybe I just need more training, but the Linux mags are for die-hard Linux people and don't have easy how-to-do columns like Windows mags have.
AMO
Also the hackers use Linux, and you wouldn't hack yourself or write viruses for your own system..I guess.
Ubuntu seems a little different though. The support is actually surprisingly good, and they do have step-by-step guides to help newbies doing things.
I still find having to use the command line frustrating though, and VIM has to be the most confusing text editor I've ever had the misfortune of using. It doesn't have the ease of something like dos's 'edit' - thats for sure. I still don't get why you can't edit using something the equivalent of notepad...if the files require root access to edit them? Unless I'm doing it wrong..which is highly likely.0 -
You can get the Ubuntu CD sent to you for free here: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/0

You can load all the codecs you need by installing automatix2 from https://www.getautomatix.com...also realplayer, adobe reader, skype, google picasa, java and many other 'essential' applications.
It's a 1click install for Kubuntu
HTH
I'm not a fan of how Automatix works. You can fall into "dependency hell".
If you need to install the codecs, it can be just a line or two away. That's the wonder of the command line. I can give you 3 lines to copy, paste and run, and you'll be all set. No having to explain, click the button on the left then look down etc...
If you don't know how to install codecs, then you haven't properly looked at Linux, nor given it enough time. Google is your friend, and if not post on a forum. And regarding Feisty. It'll go and install any codecs once they are needed. It's one of the new features.
With regards to installing hardware it can be very easy. In some cases easier than Windows. A lot of cards/devices already have drivers in Linux, or there are generic ones which they'll work with. The trick is to pick hardware that will work with Linux in the first place."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

The command line isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can through scripts install and set up many things at once. It's also easier if someone can cut and paste a few commands in rather than have to work their way through a GUI. Like for example I could give someone one command to install any needed codecs, whereas with Windows you need to go to a website to download the codec, and then run through (possibly multiple) installers.
That said GUI's do have their place. For example maybe configuring an FTP server. I'd rather do that through a GUI than command line or config."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I found ubuntu to be so much faster than windows, very very smooth and the only hassle being codecs. Unlike windows it doesn't assign resources to do things that you don't really need, therefore a major increase in power. Hence why linux game servers are the business. I'll try automatix, hopefully that makes me a more constant ubuntu user! :TNo Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30
