It is fine for her to be rude about me.

I do wonder how she will feel if her PhD is wasted and she has to work at a call centre because she can not get a job in research, will she be happy I wonder?

you have no idea what you want, you just a nice cushy job straight after graduation with no work really you are a victim of your own logic, you could be said to be just playing about doing a research degree and then at the end of it you expect to walk into a good job and you just want a cushy job on the back of your playing about in research.

phil, i work minimum 50 hour weeks and intend get a job in the field that i will have spent 7 years getting experience (with little financial reward on the way). my phd proves self motivation, ability to project manage, skills in writing and presentations, logical thought, teaching experience and commitment, amongst other things.

when i finish, i will put all of this down on my cv as evidence for why i should get a job. if you think a phd is playing about in research, it yet again proves how little you know about academia. i'm also going out of my way to get teaching, marking and admin experience in my department so that it can help me get a job as a lecturer.

it's called knowing what you need to do to get to where you want to go. i know i won't walk into a job, so i'm making sure i get as much relevant experience as possible to improve my chances (do you know how hard it is get a postdoc?!)

if you have such a flippant attitude to academic life, i can't see you surviving in a job there. just beacuse you have wasted your time at university does not mean that everyone else does.

been there done that after my undergrad degree (already posted that on this thread?!)

and if that's what i have to do to pay bills, then fine. not everyone has your superior attitude that you are somehow owed a great job with a degree.

On the one hand I feel really sorry for Phil, and then on the other.. Well.

Phil. Most jobs are had because one gets on with people. You TRULY need to get off of here, and get down the student bar. Really!!

You have NEVER acknowledged a single one of my posts, NEVER, not once. And that's the kind of thing you need to work on. Your people skills! That is what will get you jobs. Degrees don't get you jobs. Experience doesn't get you jobs. It's being able to hit it off with people that get's you jobs.

For God's sake get down the student bar.

I do read your posts and they do have useful content. I can get on with people rather well even if I am a bit shy.

There are a lot of people in here that are a lot brighter than you Phils (or whichever one you are). On paper and off it.

And melancholly was saying what the rest of us have been saying for ages. You have taken a dislike to her just because she got a good degree.

    Pathetic.

Stop being such a whining little b1tch.

I am pleased you work hard and I do hope it goes well.

But I suffer every night with this stupid degree most often nearly crying with it, so I do work myself into the ground emotionally with it.

40 to 1 for a post Doc job I do believe.

  • Hi Phil.

I'm sure people have done this before, but I'll spell it out in words of one syllable.

Get an application form. Read the person spec and the Essential Criteria.

If you haven't got most, if not all, of the essential criteria, there is not much point applying.

If you have, you can carry on with the form.

Go through each of the criteria one by one and fill the form in in such a way that you can DEMONSTRATE that you fit that criteron. For example, if it says that you need to be able to prioritise, show them how you have done that in your University work. If they say they want a team player, tell them an example of when you worked in a team and the skills you learned from it (which should be qualities that are listed on the person spec.

In the space that says further information, tell them briefly about your hobbies and interests and other personal qualities that you consider relevant. Tell them why you think you would suit the job and that you would be eager to undertake further training. Mention any voluntary work you may have done, if you have not already done so when demonstrating your essential criteria/person spec.

If your writing is not much good, type it if you can. Otherwise mention in a covering letter why your writing is untidy.

Go over the form again and make sure you have demonstrated that you have all the things they ask for.

Keep applying and don't narrow your sights too much. Apply for anything vaguely suitable - you don't have to work there for the next forty years.

Take as much trouble over an application to work in Asda as you would for one at the University.

And remember (this is a good tip for interviews too) - you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Do a good sensible application demonstrating that you have what they are asking for (no waffle) and eventually you will get a job.

    Good luck!

Never said I disliked her or had anything against her.

I just take issue with because I do not get firsts that she thinks I don't work hard. I have worked myself to near mental break down on this stupid course and I am in tears with it at least twice a week.

Phil, I have a degree in Geography and was a lollipop lady for years because of family commitments. I didn't get a job to 'suit' my degree until ten years after I had graduated.

There is no need to be too proud to do an honest job of work. You don't have to do it forever.
