  • I know its all my fault, as I have showered them in toys in previous years and now its got to stop there was always going to be the bad first year when they got used to the smaller pile of presents. I just don't want my children to suffer from my mistakes.

Ohhhh Steph ...... they won't suffer if they don't get loads of presents, honestly - and for a 6 yo, it certainly shouldn't be about how many presents she gets .... this will be the hardest year if they've always had lots of presents but it is honestly for the best
Well hubby received a call from him last night, and it sounds like he might be happy for hubby to do the roofing work as well as the loft conversion in January. He has got to go and meet up with him on Saturday, so fingers crossed we have money coming in early next year. :T:T:T:T

Ohhhhh sounds really promising, will be keeping everything crossed:)

  • We did have abit of good news yeaterday - Earlier this week I wrote about how a big loft conversion hubby was meant to be doing in January looked like it might fall through, because the guy needed roofing work done first.

That's superb news hun! Will keep my fingers crossed for your hubby xx

  • StressSteph, don't worry about the presents, 4 sounds plenty, and once she's had presents and fuss from everybody else she'll feel better.

And great news on the job! Fingers crossed!

They supply their own birthday cake?

Surely that's @rse about face

I know what you mean, but it means that it's all fair. If somebody else made your cake you might not get what you want, and you'd feel you'd need to match the amount of money and so you get inflation! At least if you provide the cake you can decide how much to spend! :) And if you threw a birthday party you'd provide your own cake.

  • Aw big hugs Hun! I'm sure she will get over it and be happy with her lot. I think at 6 she is old enough to understand the concept of money though, and you could have a vague chat with her about how much things cost etc. Personally, I told my 8 year old when his Dad had an accident and we were suddenly on benefits (this was 18 months ago so he was 6 then too), that we were struggling for money, and whilst I would always get him whatever I could, it may not be as much as before. He readily accepted this, though at the time I was concerned about telling him. I somehow thought I'd be taking his childhood away by making him realise there was such a thing as bills, debts and money worries. I now realise I was actually teaching him a valuable lesson which will help him rather than hinder him.

I've also pre-empted Christmas by telling my two that parents have to send money to Santa these days as there are so many children to provide for, therefore they will get as much as we can afford to send.

Like you though, I still worry they will be disappointed. I think it's natural for any parent to want their kids to be happy.

  • Thanks for all your replies. I have eaten left over fairy cakes and a strong coffee and have pulled myself together.:)

I have definately warned my two that we have had less money to send to santa this year and that he will get as many things as he can from their list but its not going to be everything they see on tv. (Every single toy advert they see / they want it ).

I did try to explain to DD that each box of Lego was more than £50 , but she can still remember DS's presents in September and even though he did'nt get much more, it was abit more. (pre-LBM).

Oh well. onwards and upwards. xx
I had better get off my bum and get tidying up. I have been wallowing in self-pity all morning and achieved nothing.
    speak to you all later.xxx
  • Keep smiling. I know it's tough but your kids will not be damaged by having a bit less...indeed eventually it will be to their benefit anyway!

My family weren't weatlthy when I was a kid, but what I do remember was the amount of effort that my parents put into doing everything to make Christmas/Birthdays as special as possible. That is what counts.

Your daughter will get over her "disappointment" and will probably not even remember it within a month!
    ....Practically Perfect in Every Way......:grinheart
  • We have to do this at work ..... :(

It's in your employment contract
  • And if you threw a birthday party you'd provide your own cake.

I don't know anyone who throws their own birthday party.

    Someone throws it for them.
