victory - I beleieve your PVR question has been answered.
As for your question - is Freesat or Freeview enough - only you can answer that.
What channels do you want to watch?
    What channels come with Freesat?
    http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels
    What channels come with Freeview?
    http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability/
Put your postcode in the Freeview to see exactly what you'll get in your area.

It's up to you to choose, and decide whether you want to stay subscription free, or pay per month for certain channels you want.
sniggins - you pay for decryption! Simple. Of course the TV guide costs money, but you still get it if you take your card out. No-one is billed explicitly for the running of the TV guide. Who do you pay for the Freeview or Freesat TV guides?!

the TV channels pay to get on the guide, with Freesat and Freeview.

You are paying Sky for the work they do on the guide, as it has allowed you to record the TV show, if they didn't set the start times or the series links, you wouldn't be able to record.

A lot of money is needed to keep the TV guide up to date, surely if they can justify a £10 charge it's for that not encryption.
Sky don't "justify" their charge. The reason is obvious, though; PROFIT.

When I have had both the freesat/freeview hd channels working and compared them, whilst they've been 'different' there hasn't been a change in quality of the picture, just different shading on colours.

surely that is to do with the TV and connections rather than the sourc,e as both Freesat and Freeview are digital from the same source?

Just last night I switched from Sky to Freesat. :j I feel very liberated!

I went for the Humax PVR (£200 Amazon). The set up was easy (even for a girl like me!).

I went Freesat because I already had the dish in place, I have only ever suffered a short term blip of signal in really bad weather. I also realised that I dont appear to have a normal aerial on the house so that would have been an additional cost.

I have had freesat running in another room for a while now and was happy that I wasnt missing anything compared to the Sky set up in the other room.

The new box will pay for itself well within 12 months so I am a happy MSEer!!

Well done. My wife wouldn't have any idea what to get and how to install it. She represents a typical paying end of Virgin Media / Sky market. Using a remote control is all she is good at when it comes to technology.
  • As a new owner of a Freesat ready TV I really appreciate the info in this post. The TV also has Freeview so I have been switching between the two a bit to see what channels are available on both services.

I do like Sky News but it isn't on Freesat so its just a move to the Aerial then in the TV Set up it seems. I don't suppose there is any other way round this? Will all the Freeview channels eventually end up on Freesat?

There is nothing to 'install'. Sky to Freesat is a straight box swap. Connect the Hummy, plug it in, it runs the set up.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

What additional channels are planned for FreeSat? Are there any Free to Air channels available (or worthwhile) outside of FreeSat's offering?
