    If it should be that I grow weak
    And pain should keep me from my sleep;
    Then you must do what must be done,
    For this last battle can't be won.

    You will be sad, I understand;
    But don't let grief then stay your hand.
    For this day more than all the rest,
    Your love for me must stand the test.

    We've had so many happy years;
    What is to come can hold no fears.
    You don't want me to suffer so
    The time has come, please let me go.

    Take me where my needs they'll tend,
    But please stay with me 'til the end
    To hold me close and speak to me
    Until my eyes no longer see.

    I know in time you will agree,
    It was a kindness done for me.
    Although my tail its last has waved,
    From pain and suffering I'm saved.
    Please do not grieve that it was you
    Who had this painful thing to do.
    We've been so close, we two, these years;
    Don't let your heart hold any tears.

    I feel like the grim reaper, and guilty every time I look at her.

    Please don't feel like this.

    It's a very brave decision to have to make (I've had to do it 4 times with my cats) but, in fairness to your pet, you have to do what is right for her and, tbh, it really does sounds like she not happy in herself.

    Thinking of you.

    I cried yesterday when I read this, and I'm crying again now. Add onto that the beautiful poem that Froglet posted, and I've got a soggy pile of tissues here.

    When my big dog died, I knew that I'd be in bits, so a few days before he had to be pts, I rang the dog pound in Swansea that was still having to put down dogs if not claimed in 7 days, and told them I'd be down there when Dobe went. I wouldn't neccessarily be keeping all the ones I took, but I'd clean them all up and get homes for the ones I didnt keep.

    So when Dobe died, I went to the pounds (face looking like a swollen beetroot), brought back the dogs who were about to be pts, and set about sorting them out. It was total chaos, they ranged from emaciated to totally hyperactive, but it certainly helped take my mind off things. They all got wormed, defleaed, neutered, bathed, everthing they needed. After homing a few to friends, and big GSD passing away a few years back, I still have 3 of them. The VERY OLD GSD was believed to have only a few weeks left to live, he was so emaciated, but I brought him home because I wanted him to have a last few weeks in my home. He then promptly doubled in weight and went on for another 5 years, dying at about 14, a very good age for a GSD.

    I dont know what I'd do next time- I now have 4 dogs, but to lose the one who is closest to me will put me back into the position when I lost Dobe, and I haven't got a clue what I'll do, I'll just go along with my feelings at the time.

    Really, really sorry for you OP, but this is the kindest of all things that you are going to do, and by having the vet come out to the house, you will be giving your dog the peaceful death that is actually denied to most humans. Making dying as peaceful as possible is the best last present that we can give.
    DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.
  • We had to have a lovely Tc (Tabby Cat) put to sleep on Thursday. She had both Thyroids removed and developed some sort of Neurological condition. She was due to have a scan but deteriorated rapidly on Thursday. Broke my heart to have her put to sleep but it was a release for her as I swear she was asking me to let her go those last couple of days. I still have her sister and another cat but still put 3 bowls out instead of 2 and call all three names at dinner time. Hubby has loaded a picture of her on my desktop so very time I switch the computer on she pops up to see me. I dont think we lose them as long as we remember them ,and keep them in our hearts. I think releasing them is our last gift of love. Sending you lots of Love and Hugs.

    My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Mum and Dad have just had to get our family dog, Copper, put to sleep due to old age and it is never easy but it is the right thing to do. I so agree with you about how fate brings these dogs to us as I have got my last 3 rescue dogs through unusual circumstances. They most definately chose us and not the other way around. When the time is right I dare say your next dog will find you. (((hugs)))
  • Just got the guts to read this. Have had to skim through the tears.

    Lost our boy 6 weeks ago. Am bouncing between no one ever living up to him, and so not wanting a dog again, to NEEDING a dog NOW, but not being able to face getting the same breed.

    Lovely thoughts and sentiments from everyone here.

    Little ones sum up so much - my youngest nephew, when told a friends dog had died asked where he had gone. His mum replied "somewhere lovely" and he replied "marks and spencers?"

    As he got older and understood Heaven, he misheard this as Kevin - in the sky. However there was confusion as they had buried their cat, how would Kevin get her? He decided a rope and pulley system was how Kevin got her to the sky!
    NOT a NEWBIE!

    What a wonderful wonderful thing to do for those poor dogs.You are a lovely kind person to take them all on like that and it is so good to hear they all did so well.

    When I lost my first dog at well over 15 who was the runt of the litter and about to be put to sleep at the vets,and who saw me through a horrible violent marriage and afterwards,I thought I would never get over it.I raised a lot of money for the RSPCA via a HUGE jumble sale.It kept me busy and gave me a purpose.Within 3 months i got another unwanted dog and she too had a great life.Through ill health i did not replace her but do intend ,once i get over my next op, getting one next year sometime.

    Doggie heaven - sounds lovely! hope it is near 'people heaven'!

    hun, just think how devastated your dog would be if one of its 'humans' got hurt while it was ill! much kinder to send her on before the happy memories are spoilt.

    and while christmas looms, perhaps getting another dog now would free up a 'place' for the after christmas rush? its really up to you - but, it would be a kindness to any dog stuck in a rescue to get a home at any time of year! you are a responsible pet owner so there shouldnt be a problem.

    I am so sorry you are losing your lovely pet - I have lost some myself and would 'adopt' again in a heartbeat - but OH says no more!
