UPDATED Sadly we have had to make the difficult decision to send our lovely dog to (in my grand-daughters words) Doggie Heaven. We have had her 10 years, a little rescue dog, content to just have a home and be loved. A brain tumor is now affecting her behaviour and our most gentle and trusted friend is becoming unpredictable. We have all been making excuses for her changed behaviour, but have to face the reality that she is "nipping" us and snarling and baring her teeth. We feel she is not happy and now is the time. Monday the vet will come and the family who loved her will all be with her. It is heart-breaking, and I see big grown men and women in my house today tearing up as I tell them. I feel like the grim reaper, and guilty every time I look at her. The las time we had to do this, it took 25 years for us to get another dog and now we have to do it again. I said some time ago that if anything happened her we would have to get another dog immediately, as we would miss her so much. My family very kindly and gently remind me of this, but I could not face it. I'm telling them I couldn't because Christmas is near and I couldn't take on another dog with all the people coming and going etc etc. But I wonder if we ever will again. What are your thoughts, advice. My grand-daughter has painted a lovely picture in my mind of what will happen in "Heaven". She will grow lovely wings Nannie, and will fly and be your Guardian Angel dog. All the sofas and chairs are made of clouds and she can jump on anyone she wants. And she can play with my Gaurdian Angel Hamster. The innocence of little children!!

Oh I feel for you so much :kisses3:, we have had our beautiful girl PTS just a couple of days ago. She went at home also with us all by her side. Its so hard and I don't think I will ever get over losing her
I dont have any advice for you but I can send you lots of love :heartsmil0 -
The hardest thing any loving pet owner has to face.
Hugs to both of you0 -
Feeling for you and the dread you must be feeling about Monday . If you know she isn't herself , is nipping etc and you know she cannot get better , then you're doing the kindest thing for her . It's a downside to loving a pet but they give us so much pleasure too . Thinking of you all.0

I lost my lottle Lhasa Apso one month ago due to a brain tumour. She had gone blind gradually over the past 4 months. She never became 'nippy', just the opposite, never far from my side. I had to make the awful decision as she deteriorated rapidly over the final 2 days.
My heart goes out to you. I had a dog shaped hole in my life, which can only be filled with another little soul to love.
Best wishes.xx0 -
I just saw your post and I couldn't not post. Big Hugs (()) its so awful when its their time to go. I know exactly how you feel, our beloved westie Toby died over 2 years ago now.
I can't tell you how desolate I and Mr Budgie felt, I was more upset over Toby than I was when my Gran died a few months later.
I said at the time that I would never have another dog and I meant it very much. Time though is a healer as people say and now I am ready to have another dog, circumstances at the moment mean I am at home to look after and train a puppy etc. I shall be going back to work but only part time.
Monday is going to be a very hard day and I wish I could say something which would help....................Your Grandaughter sounds adorable and my friend who is a dog lover, posted a story on facebook awhile ago.
It was what a little boy said when the vet came to put their beloved dog to sleep.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
I think that is so true, so be glad that you gave her a loving home and that she loved you so much for it.
I'll have to go as I feel very touched, sorry for the above ramblings, I hope it makes sense? But I just couldn't not post.
Big hugs and take care

Just as everyone else has said I feel so sorry for you, it is a huge decision but as a caring pet owner you know it is the right one for your dog- if not for you. Here I am tears streaming down my face- my beautiful hound went over 3 years ago but I miss her loads.
I had to get another dog within weeks as my old boy was pining away- I had planned to leave a much longer gap.
Only you can decide how long to wait, perhaps get past Christmas with all the comings and goings and then have a think. I would say there are loads of rescue dogs just waiting for a loving home........ If you are used to having a dog then I think you will find your home lacks a furry bundle to welcome you.
Clearly you have family to share your sorrow, but if you want to talk to someone else there is always the pet bereavement service:
0800 096 6606 (UK only including northern Ireland). The support line is open from 8.30am - 8.30pm everyday. All calls are free and confidential from a landline. If calling from a mobile phone, some phone networks may charge.
You can also e-mail them- all the details here:

Take care.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
