  • So in a year they've managed to swindle nearly an extra £10 from their customers for a broadband connection where there's NO obvious difference between 20mb and 30mb, with even more restrictions and now a longer default contract length of 18 months.

How come they no longer offer slower speeds? Their slowest broadband only package is now 30mb which will be £27.50 a month from next year.

If you download more than 3.5GB between the hours of 4pm and 9pm it gets reduced to 15mb. Thanks to the faster speeds is even easier to hit now!!

Their 20mb service with ebilling at £17 a month was superior, you could also download 1gb more in the afternoon/evening before their restrictions kicked in.

    They're an absolute joke.

Has everyone received a letter about price rise ?

    I haven't yet.

Don't think I received one last time either.

I received mine.. just over £1 increase from February. Still it will be less than £20 a month for me so I can live with that. I don't really have any better alternatives anyway.

I've only got 10Mb/s, to be upgraded to 20Mb/s. I'm happy with that.

We wanted to let you know that, from 1st February 2013*, the price of your Virgin Media services will increase by £5.34 a month. It's never nice when prices go up but it means we can continue to give you the best home entertainment and services.

From reading this thread am I right in understanding that I can leave my contract because of this price rise?

Also some time back they increased the broadband speed, did that restart my contract?
  • @Zag, yes you can, but you need to cancel within 30 days of receiving the letter. Otherwise they will charge you £X per month of remaining contract, depending on what services you're signed up to
  • I Really don't understand what half of you people are talking about, "yes" a company will increase prices year on year because of the rising costs of running a buisness alongside supporting other companies eg starbucks who refuse to put back into the system. If you are having service issues call Virgin up they offer a "Free" technical support service by dialing 151 but i imagine many of you are to lazy to do so and expect 100% service all the time (it just doesnt work that way, problems happen)

Virgin offer Free service and repairs on your equipment, in comparison to sky who charge stupid prices and try to sell you insurance on a tv box which is terrible when ever their is rain.

Virgin offer fibre optic broadband which yes they have said they are going to double but they have said they are having problems doing so and it will take a bit longer.

These companies need to run to provide you a service, if you can't afford to pay for a luxury that is TV don't!! Don't get the latest mobile buy a cheap phone to ride you through the storm that is the recession. Virgin offer their media customers a sim only for £5 a month how many other companies do so, have a look and ask yourself?is all this complaining worth it.

It was always going to happen!!

Ok, so spent all morning looking for alternative deals elsewhere - our £52.40 was going up by £5+. Phoned VM, spoke to them about changing our package before being put through to disconnections. They offered to increase our broadband from 20 - 30, send out a new hub (both of which I think we were entitled to anyway), and have dropped the price so that including the price rise in feb it will be £51.40. Quite happy with that, I actually really like our VM services but would have gone elsewhere if I had to!

I like my VM services, I am on a retention deal which they told me would be fixed for 12 months.

it raised 11.3% in 12 months, including the latest £5.59 increase.

If I could have it all without a phone it would be fantastic, this insistence on the phone (which has seen the most rises in 12 months)

Yes price rises happen, but in this industry they seem to think that multiple rises multiple times a year are acceptable, they each affect a different part of your bundle - so there's nothing 'bundled' about VM
  • Forget quidco if you've had it paid you wont need to repay it.

Wait for your letter and refuse the increase by the means shown on the letter.

Don't be surprised if they do what many companies have done lately which is write off the increase when you complaint to retain your custom (and in VM's case, potentially a new contract if they activate a change of service terms for those outside minimum periods...)[/QUOTE]

    Thanks for that.

Just cancelled okay. Will look at it again in the new year when hopefully my circumstances have improved.
  • My package is as follows:

30mb Broadband (still waiting for the free double speed increase, now due in my area late 2013)

XL TV with Tivo 500GB box and free second box (second box not needed as we have freeview in the other room)

    XL Phone with caller display

Cost current £55 going up to £60 next year.

Called them and told them I was leaving and now have:

30mb Broadband (will still get double speed when it arrives in my area)

M TV with Tivo 500GB Box and NO second box

    XL Phone with caller display

Total and told no increase next year £30

So they put the prices up and I save £30 on the increased 2013 cost.

Will not miss the extra channels as never watched them and will stick with Freeview HD in the other room. Well worth the £30 saving

Check your bill closely in February/March 2013. The '3 for £30' deal that you've got is due to rise to £32.90 next year and I don't believe that retentions can put a price freeze on your account.
