Your timescales should be reasonable. 14 days for each response is fair for a business of that size.

Be careful here - if you are planning to involve the Financial Ombudsman, you MUST give the banks the 8 weeks for their complaints procedure. If you intend to take the bank to court, you send them 2 letters altogether with 14 days response time each before you file the court claim.

Hi there, I have recently sent a letter to rbs requesting to reclaim my bank charges and received a letter stating they are looking into it and I should hear within 6-8 weeks. It is been about 3-4 weeks and just checking my online account with them there has been a bacs credit put it in the name of Foundation for cre. Can anyone shed any light on this. Would this be the first part of my reclaimed charges. It was only for £26.60 and I am trying to reclaim £1750.00. I phone the bank and they said someone would ring me in 48 hours as they weren't sure either.
  • I would think that this BACs payment was a coincidence, worth asking the bank for some more information.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • I would not think that it is anything to do with your claim. Ring Customer Relations on 0800 0155 035, option 1 for calls about charges and have your reference number at the ready. Ask them how your claim is progressing because you were curious. They told me after about 3 weeks that I was getting everything back that I had asked for (£7,500) and I just needed to wait for the letter. Give RBS the time and they will give you a decent offer. My wife and I waited and in 8 weeks from the day they sent us the "we need 6-8 week" reply the money was in our accounts. Hang on in there!!!
  • hi thanks for the replies i dont think i explained myself properly with my first post .The letter i sent to the bank is the one giving them 14 days to pay me before i take further action. Their letter said they are currently looking into the issue we have raised and will let us know as soon as possible. They included a leaflet explaining their time scales ie 7 days then its 28 days then 56 days then if im unhappy with their response i can take it to the f.o.service ,today is the end of the 14 day period i gave them so do i give them the extra days they require ie 7 extra days up to 56 days or do i press on next week and put a claim in through the court or as previosly posted give them the 56 days before going to the financil ombudsman sending a further letter with my intentions of which route i intend to follow

sorry for the lengthy letter but i dont want to give them the slightest excuse for more delays due to my ignorence

It's completely up to you which route you take, you can file a court claim now or wait 8 weeks altogether and go to the FO then.
