We managed to check in at a store in Florida yesterday and got a free sample with the Foursquare app. Just a shame no amex promotions available. But still nice to know the app works over here.:j

Why wouldn't it work? Normal Foursquare specials have nothing to do with American Express and it's an international app, specifically designed for this exact use.
    | Amex & Foursquare Hoarder |
    Cashback & Points (26/02/13)
    Nectar: 71,816 (£357) | Avios: 62,036 | Membership Rewards: 45,076 (£225)
    Foursquare & Xbox Cashback: £1,865 | Quidco Paid: £986
  • I echo that. The free sample doesn't appear to have anything to do with AMEX - Foursquare is a US app and wherever you go there will be offers. When I went to NYC I got freebies left right and centre. It's more likely that you'll get something in the states without having to be mayor. The relevance of getting a free sample in Florida doesn't have anything to do with AMEX and their offers.

Disappointingly slim pickings at the moment. I have an amex card I want to close so I can be a new customer again in 6 months time - I am wondering if now is the moment?
    I think....
  • Nobody can say. We might got more offers than we've ever had in May, who knows.

Why don't you get another Amex card first (with a different reward programme), and then cancel your existing one?

My understanding was that you only qualify for the intro offers if you re a 'new customer' which means no Amex product for 6 months - is this wrong?

Obviously I could go for a non-amex issued amex to keep eligibility for foursquare offers.
    I think....

    Yes, that's wrong.

If you hold a card with MR, then you can't get any MR bonuses unless you cancel your card and reapply after 6 months.
If you hold a cashback card, then you can't get any cashback bonuses unless you cancel your card and reapply after 6 months.
If you hold a BAcard, then you can't get any BA bonuses unless you cancel your card and reapply after 6 months.

For example: "I understand I will not be eligible for any Welcome Bonus award if I hold or have held any Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Card in the past six months."

Thank you, that is indeed interesting information.

So my follow up quesiton relates to credit scoring - if you have an MR card are you more or less likely to be accepted for a different type of card?

It's impossible to tell. It really depends on your credit file and other financial circumstances. Amex allows you to have up to 2 credit cards and 2 charge cards.
