New Kitchen - Where to buy?

Comments

  • Hello, I bought an Ikea kitchen in the summer, and it's great.

We went and paid for picking (£15) but took it home ourselves, and fitted it ourselves (we are not super handy, it was easy) The ikea fitting is very very expensive, but the units are cheap.

What I like about Ikea (apart from the price & quality) is how easy it is to a. design the kitchen using their planner and b. take things back and change them. My budget was £3000 for an 18 unit kitchen, we spent £2900, and ended up taking abot £300 worth back. We got top of the range handles etc.

I now a lot of people slate ikea, but I am very happy with my kitchen.

Even if you don't buy from there, have a go on their 3d planner, it's great!

I've been looking at Ikea but have been advised that the floor cabinets run all the way back to the wall? That would be an issue in our current kitchen without loads of modification work!

I do like their kitchen range though :o

  • When you say the units run back to the wall, isnt this the case with all kitchen units?

No. Most have an area behind them - i..e behind the carcass back panels - for pipes.

This is a really interesting thread. I am in the same position as you, with a similar budget. I had no idea Homebase were so ill thought of, I've been looking there as they have a half price sale (though it ends today).

We are having some building work done too at the same time, the builder will put our kitchen in, and he suggested Howdens as he has a discount/trade card. I just thought they would be much more expensive.

The kitchen i had orginally priced up with homebase came in at £8500 after the sale, for 8 units, hob and oven . Massive rip off!!

To be fair though their kitchen desingers do know their stuff, im using the part break down list they gave me to price up other kitchens with other companies. Im hoping to come to a conclusion by Saturday as to what im going for.

Would you recommend an appointment with someone like Homebase then just to get their design input? I must admit, I have never done anything like this before. I have had a go an at online planner, but I know I must be making stupid mistakes. My husband pointed out I probably shouldn't put the dishwasher on the opposite side to the sink if I wanted to keep plumbing costs down :rotfl:

Good luck for deadline Sat! Looking forward to seeing what you go with.

Yes id recommend if you are struggling with a design, plus they give you a 3d rendering to show you what it will look like. I originally did my design in Google Sketchup and took that in for them to see what i was after. After a few tweeks and a couply of hours later i have my parts list, quote and renderings which i used to show my fitter what i wanted.

I had a rough quote done by them a couple of years ago and wasn't that impressed. It didn't include any appliances or work on the kitchen and was still around 12K.
