    Hi

I know how you feel! HAILFAX nearly killed me a few weeks ago, my silly husband went overdrawn by 50 but in was in 9 transactions

They charged us £30 for every swicthed transaction.
    £90 a day for 3 days £270.00 plus £28

my heart sank! and my husband was about to run out the front door!!!!

After spending 5 hours calling all open branches, i found a lady (branch manger) who helped me, she refunded all of the chargers.

Just cant belieive how they are allow to charge up to £90 max a day. plus why does the transactions keep going through, why doesnt it decline?

i wish i read the t&c before i opened account!

I can say i no longer bank with the hailfax.

If i was you id call your local branch in the morning and talk to the manager and try and get them refunded. Try not to worry to much.

    Good luckx

Charge for exceeding an authorised overdraft at any time during any calendar month: £28.
Paid item charge: £30 for each transaction (maximum of 3 charges per day).
Unpaid cheques, standing orders and Direct Debits: £39 per item (maximum of 3 charges per day).
Stopped cheques (except for lost/stolen cheques): £7.50.
    Extra statements: £5.00.
    CHAPS payment: £25.
    Banker's draft: £10. pixel.gifshim.gif<!-- / message -->

So - the bank refunded the charges - and you reward them by no longer banking with them? Good luck with finding a bank that doesn't charge.

NB - the current court case isn't about whether banks are allowed to charge, but about the level of those charges.
  • Hi everyone,
Fortunately or not, this is the first time i have had to come onto this thread.

I bank with Halifax and have done for years. I received a bank charge notification letter today which says they are charging me £70 for two unpaid items.
When i've checked it they are charging me £35 for a standing order of £600 from my main halifax account to another one i have with them and another £35 for the same sort of standing order of £250 to my third halifax account.

What i've realised has happened is that i changed the date in december as i got paid earlier allowing the two regular standing orders to come out on the 23rd of the month rather than the 31st. Unfortunately i didn't change these back and hence they have tried to take the money out of my main account before i've been paid.

I have phoned the bank up but the guy on the other end (who was rather rude) threw quite a lot of jargon at me and because the same thing happened last year they won't reverse one of the charges, let along look into reversing both of them.

I asked how it can possibly cost Halifax £35 to move money from one of my accounts with them to another one but he said it costs £35 regardless of where it is going.

I am beside myself. I don't know what to do as i haven't got £70 that i can just hand over to the bank.

Can anyone help me? Do i have a leg to stand on or an argument that i can use against them?
  • In the middle of last year I received a refund on bank charges from Halifax. Since then I have continued to incur charges on my account, however I do not appear to be receiving their notification letters and consequently am constantly surprised when they hit me with charges. I wondered if any one else is having a similar problem. Are Halifax not sending me stuff or is it going missing?
  • Hi , I've just read your 'quote' on the website - I too am having the same problem with the Halifax as you - they have NOT sent me ANY notification of bank charges being charged or removed - I have been absolutely disgusted with them - I have incurred £340.00 of charges and yet no notification. They say they have - but I 100% have never received them . I too received some money back from them when this Panorama program highlighted the charges and I now feel they purposely haven't notified me. I am locked in a bitter dispute with them- In their leaflet it states 'we will give you 15 days notice in order for you to put your account into credit to avoid incurring any further charges' - this they have not done. What are you doing about it?
    Kind Regards.
  • Hi Doris7, thanks for your reply. I logged a complaint with Halifax yesterday that I've not received any notification of charges from them - but they are saying the letters were sent and I know I haven't received them. I've also told Royal Mail that the letters haven't been delivered and they're looking into it (but having heard your experience I now don't believe they've been sent in the first place). It seems to me that they are taking back the money they offered as a settlement in a very underhand way. I said I would be challenging these new charges and they said that I couldn't as the first payment "was in full and final settlement". I will challenge this as I didn't accept the payment in writing which they said I had to do - the money just appeared in my account. I am so angry with them. They took £250 this week, not what I need in January! I don't know what to do next really. It will be interesting to see if any more people are experiencing the same problem - strength in numbers!
  • Just wondering whether anyone has had any luck recently claiming back from the Halifax? I think they owe us about £1500ish. Don't know whether to try and claim this back now but I believe theyre on hold...is it worth it or should I wait (I just read on the bbc.co.uk that it could be next year though!)

    Any help appreciated!

    Hi all
I placed a claim for bank charges (Halifax) in March 07, requesting a breakdown.I recieved a statement saying i had paid £5200:o (i nearly died), over the 6 years (mainly over a two year period when my business failed),they also kindly sent a letter refusing to offer any kind of re-imbursment as i believe the amount was over the £5000 limit for small claims.Ive since left it as the case has gone to court but wondered if any one else has had a similair situation or can offer any advice for me.
    Thanks
  • im not too sure what to do here, possibly do two seperate claims between to different dates??
  • Hello
I don't know if I'm in the right place here, I've looked aimlessly through the forums to see if there is something similar to what I need advice on.
I would be very grateful if someone could help/offer advice please.

I have been paying on my Halifax Credit card for what seems like an eternity and getting nowhere fast at all. I pay regularly, on time and slightly above the minimum due amount. I have not missed a payment.

Also, I have not used my credit card for well over a year, it may even be two years. I cannot afford to pay more than I am already paying and I wish I could pay this off altogether but feel I am being robbed blind. The card is of no use to me because I just daren't use it.

I have been paying off £500 and even after all this time, the balance remaining is still only £459.28. I pay £15.00 per month and the minimum payment (variable) is around £10.00 per month.

I have never took much notice of my statements before (yes, fool me I know) except to see when my payment is due. (Usually around the same time but I like to make sure).

What I cannot understand is that I'm being charged interest on:
    Cash: 0.068% per day (27.95% pa) = £1.86
    Purchases: " " " " " " " = £6.15
    Cheques: " " " " " " " = £1.60

On top of that, they're charging me £3.48 per month Repayment cover which I don't ever remember asking for because at the time of setting this account up, I was on incapacity benefit and didn't see the need for it. In fact I cannot remember if I was asked anyway.

As I said, these are variable every month. I have not used my card at all as said before for well above a year or more so therefore not used it to obtain cash etc.
I have not purchased anything and as for cheques, I may have used a few in the past but then again, not for hell of a long time.

I have not approached Halifax as yet because I wanted to find out if anyone else has or had the same problem. It seems very strange though that I have been paying £15 per month and my balance has only gone down by approx £40.

Can they charge these ridiculous amounts and can I claim any of it back?
I really need help, can anyone out there advise please?

    Thank you in advance.
  • Hi

Thanks to all u guys that run this website it’s been very helpful. you have probably heard this question before but I cant find any information about how to class a credit card

I have recently requested the bank of Scotland to repay all my bank fee's I received a letter back after sending the first letter With claiming interest and I am not sure how to respond I currently have a student bank account with bank of Scotland so I am not sure if this is a counted as a credit card or not.

Can I continue my claim or do I have to wait in till the legal proceedings between the OFT and banks finish as I know people with credit cards can continue.

I really need to clear the overdraft by June because my over draft will need renewed by then and I am no longer a student.
I can post the letters i received or any other information required.
    thanks for your help
    Ben
