You can rest assured that, if there were really a bank that pays 60%AER we would all have heard about it!
    ;-)

Haha! Yes, I was getting excited at the 4% pa! Actually, I was just on my way out and thought I would dash off the post. Thanks for picking me up on my error. Too stupid. :o

    Isn't it?

2 days later, I get the paperwork from HMRC explaining it all in detail. The cheque I received on Monday was related to an overpayment in the most recent tax year, 2011-12, but it appears that there are also repayments due from 2006-7 and 2004-5, so more cheques should be arriving. Not as straightforward as all that!

Obviously not since you are getting cheques, that's what's called a result and you did it yourself. perhaps you should have been a little more enquiring a little earlier

No, I'm afraid not. It is still a mystery to me why I've overpaid, especially for those previous years. I do get paperwork from HMRC February/March every year and I'm fairly savvy about what I should be paying and what not. HMRC moves in a mysterious way its wonders to perform.

I did not 'do it myself', I only looked at the year with which the notification was headed and I knew we'd had this problem with not getting the marriage allowance split between us for one year, so I assumed that was why. Even after getting all the paperwork, 2 days after the cheque, I'm still not clear about it all. It appears I'm still due another cheque, and they've paid interest on what they owe me for those earlier years.

See your post #83 and keep enquiring. They will send you a calculation for the years concerned, all you have to do is ask.

They have. It appears I still have repayment/s due for those 2 earlier years, including interest. I still don't understand it, but I'm not questioning it any more.
