Blasted Employers Snubbing Long Term Jobless People!

Are there any job hunters on here who are feeling really angry over these employers who are snubbing your job applications once they hear you have been out of work over six months? I have just been knocked back - yet again - by an employer who, despite my 25 years admin experience, are refusing to consider me just because I have been out of work for a while. It is ridiculous. How the hell do they expect you to get a job if they won't even consider you in the first place?

These ultra choosy employers seem oblivious to the fact that there is a recession on, and so there are THOUSANDS of people who have been out of work over six months. These employers need to get real. They make my blood boil.

But perhaps you need to take on board some of the advice on other threads.

25 years admin experience wouldn't mean any more to me than 5 years, to be honest, things have changed so much that your experience from before that is obsolete.

You don't have any IT qualifications or experience in basic admin software like Excel. Frankly, I suspect your CV will make you look quite out of date with current admin/office practice.

What you seem to be thinking of as an 'admin' role may be quite different to the reality of what you are applying for these days, especially if you've not been in an office for a few years, and especially if you were at your last employer for quite some time without any changes to how things were done. There are no jobs out there where all you need is a nice phone manner and an ability to file in alphabetical order, and able to type a letter in Word.

Our new office manager has advanced Excel and Access and is rejuvenating our tired old systems we set up only a few years ago but now look about 100 years old compared to what is possible now. Does 'cloud' mean anything to you? It should. Can you do mailmerge not only to paper but also to an email list? Excel lookups and so on? Can you manage electronic diaries? Can you type at a reasonable speed (over say 40wpm)? All these are now very basic level admin staff skills.

Update yourself. Training. Get some recent experience even if voluntary.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

You've got a damn cheek saying that my IT skills are "out of date". On the contrary, they are very much UP TO DATE. I use Excel, Word and other IT packages all the time. I am NOT stuck in the 1981 era of Sight and Sound touch typing secretarial work. I always make sure my skills are current. So before you start forming offensive misconceptions about people, stop and think, and make sure you get your facts right about a person's ACTUAL circumstances.

The ones you need to be directing your inflammatory comments at are these arrogant, self-centred employers who are refusing to give us jobseekers a chance just because we have been out of work for a while.

I understand the need to vent.

I thought the younger people were having difficulty getting a job too.

Truego did they specifically say they turned you down because you have been out of work so long?

I haven't read your previous threads, so excuse my ignorance, but have you thought about doing volunteer work? or a work trial?

Well, basically, what they said (this was an agency who have a contract with a Civil Service department) is that would need to reference me for at least THREE YEARS, and as I had not worked in a job for any longer than just a few weeks, they told me they could not put me forward due to the gaps in my work history, which I think is ridiculous.

Yes, I am indeed trying to get voluntary work, as it always look good on your CV. Unfortunately, even trying to get that is proving hard, due to the many others applying for that too (they see it as a way of getting into a paid job).

I can't think of a nice way to say this but - you are the one who needs to get real.
Any experienced employee worth their salt would have been successful in finding employment, any kind of employment, within 6 months - even temp work or cleaning jobs alone shows drive, determination, flexibility and marketable skills. Not finding any work at all shows that you have none of these skills and so why should someone employ you if you are so obviously no good?

Inexperienced graduates are a completely different kettle of fish as they are in a catch 22 situation - no job means no experience, and experience is often a prerequisite for a job.

OP - do-it indicates there are in excess of 180 volunteering opportunities within 1 mile of Liverpool, Merseyside. Try Red Cross, I walked in with an enquiry and walked out with a volunteer position.

Try coming down to the Wirral, mate, and see just how difficult it is to get a job here - ANY job, for that matter, and not just a cleaning one. It is the WORST place in the UK for unemployment.

And what the hell do you mean by "no good"? May I remind you that I have worked for BIG organisations like the Civil Service, the Police etc. So if I really was "no good", as you put it, then I wouldn't have got such important jobs, would I?

    OH PUH-LEASE CHANGE THE RECORD
you post on here SO regularly about how you're having a hard time getting a job.
if you put as much effort into looking for a job as posting on here you'd probably be employed by now.
