Hello ampersand. Am posting from my PC in the Sydney CBD. Am monotasking as a form or work avoidance.

CNN has Obama likely to win with a slightly reduced electoral college majority. Fox News also has Obama down as a winner. Obama seems to think he's won too although I guess he's not exactly impartial!

There's a bit of an argument breaking out on CNN between a blonde woman and a brunette about why Romney has lost. It's either because he's out of touch or because women hate him. They can't decide so they've switched to a bloke now.

I love these all night election shows.

And I, New Zealander, thoroughly enjoyed your post, 1st and last para's especially d'accord.

It was raining in Sydney when I was last there, early May, à propos of nul.

Any chance you can pick up the Simon Shama piece on i-player? It was a delicious, logical dissection which GOP woman was not intellectually equipped to appreciate.

Whole new interpretation for 'the elephant in the room'.

Romney concession delay surely explained by his earlier declaring that he'd written only a Victory speech.

Just noticed that the red/blue bars allocated to Obama and Romney in the poll heading Thread are the reverse of their party colours[and I have to remember, too. Blue doesn't associate itself naturally with me]

Romney speaking now, done and dusted.

Anyhoo, am off home. Hope the rain didn't spoil your enjoyment of our wonderful city. I'm a Pom BTW.

Romney conceded so I can now vote for Obama in this poll.

    Toodle pip!

Bonne nuit Generali - interesting extra is seeing some State-specific legislative results re: marijuana, gay marriage. Some surprising results and representatives.

Looks like Obama will squeak the popular vote, too, après tout.
What a cracking acceptance speech! He seemed freed up, unconstrained and truly giving of a strong personal credo. It was as if this victory, unencumbered by the unrealistic expectations of 2008 in a global downturn, may well shame more 'sleeves up,hunker down and get stuck in'co-operation from surprising sources. At least, any political refusal can be conveyed/spun as producing GOP hostage to Democrat fortune.

Great victory speech by Obama. The Republicans are a white male dominated party that hold no attraction to huge swathes of society including women, young people, the Hispanics, Latinos, African Americans etc. Obama offered hope and opportunity for everyone. Romney believes in trickle down economics which will spread wealth to the disadvantaged..... presumably guided by his exclusive gentlemans club.
  • I am over the moon with this result.

But I have family in Virginia and am over in the states quite a bit usually via New Jersey, and I can tell you the re-election of Obama is bordering on civil war type feelings with many people.

I hope and pray that him and his family have the best protection possible because I am certain he will need it at some point in his 4 year term.

Indeed, it staggers me how much they spend on electioneering - not just in the US though, they get though a lot over here as well.

CNN make a good point. There are 30 out of 50 Governors that are Republican and Obama is only really taking the urban and suburban areas. There is not going to be mass public support for his poicies and he is going to have a hard time getting pretty much anything contentious through the House.

This is what I find so amazing about the system in America. You have governors who are the local leader in the state. As you say, there are 30 out of 50. Even states that are predominantly Democrat (think California, New Jersey, Massachusetts) will often have Republican governors, albeit they tend to be of the more moderate variety (it is only in politics that I will describe Arnie as a moderate...).

Then you have the House of Representatives (Congress), with seats devised according to the number of population. AIUI this will still be Republican, even though we've just seen more than half of the population vote Democrat as Obama got both the popular and electoral college votes.

Finally you have the Senate, with two senators per state. Now given that you have so many red (Republican) states, you'd think that would be Republican, but no, its run currently by the Democrats.

You've got to hand it to the Founding Fathers. They set out to devise a system that wouldn't give one party overall control easily and they have certainly achieved that.
