They are valid votes cast not spoilt papers and there appears to be more candidates that were generally believed to explain the difference. See the link.
They include two candidates who got no votes at all. And Rosanne Barr's People Freedom Party
Good point Bob. I forgot you could do a write-in on US elections. Write-in and Ballot Access candidates are an interesting feature of US elections from what I now understand. The idea that someone cannot appear on the ballot paper but can tell their supporters to write their name on the ballot paper (or add a sticker) seems an interesting idea.
