How can I hide my ip address?

I know there are lots of companies out there who provide software to hide ip's for anonymous browsing but I don't know which ones to trust - any recommendations?

Ideally I would like a free one but would consider paying if necessary.

Just to be clear - it is not that I want to stop anyone who was looking at my pc from seeing what I have been looking at (I think I could use chrome incognito for that) but it is so I can open an account with a company without them knowing it is me.

Many thanks.

    depending on use
    tor
    i2p
    proxy
    vpn

    google which-vpn-providers-really-take-anonymity-seriously

All of these have limitations when it comes to security, privacy and anonymity.

To open an account with made up details, Tor Bundle is probably the best and easiest. Mailinator is good for emails.

Although TOR is anonymous, the data is not private, or secure, so do not used any identification that links to you, like real name, phone number, account number etc.

www.hidemyass.com is a free, safe and simple proxy server - just use it as and when you want to perform illegal actions !!
When combined with INPRIVATE BROWSING (IE9) - Tracing your highly doubtful web trawling will be next to impossible !!

I think the word you were thinking of was dubious :) But surely police digital forensics could ask the relevant country's authorities to demand the data from whoever is running the servers?

if you don't have a fixed ip address, and clear your cookies, they are unlikely to know it's you

What he is saying is that both the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and the EU Data Retention Directive mean that ISPs log IP addresses already.

The proposed Communications Data Bill will increase the data ISPs need to keep.

It doesn't matter if you use a fixed or a dynamic IP address, this must still be logged by the ISP.

Sorry - that was sent from my mobile - I was so shocked to hear that someone honestly believed that simply erasing their browsing tracks on their PC meant that nobody could tell where they had been - that I sent a short and sweet message !!
No - ISPs hold a record of ALL the webpages that ALL of us browse - in theory forvever - your only way to avoid this is by using a proxy - which then means that your true ID is hidden - but even using a proxy is no guarantee !!
To be honest - the chances of being caught (if you are just downloading "stuff") is zero - but in the case of real crimes - then I wouldn't like to say........ (in the case of 9/11, the US would have done everything possible to trace the miscreants !!)
    Say no more.
  • I am not trying to cover up an illegal activity - I had an account with an online bookmaker and made a modest profit. They closed my account.

My spouse would now like to open an account with the same bookie but I have no doubt their account will be immediately closed too if it comes from the same ip address as me.

I just wanted a way to be able to open an account without them knowing it was coming from the same household.

  • I have tried services like hidemyass and they will take you to the front page of the site but you can't log in.
