Thanks for all the replies folks.
think i will pop along to an apple store and find out a bit more about the MAC systems etc before making a decison0 -
With your budget, you will get a much better spec PC which will handle video and photo editing software much better than any mac at that price.
Macs used to be so much better before they went with intel, now the only difference really between them is the OS.
Used both Pc and Mac's within printing and magazine printing industry for over 16 years.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

All you're highlighting here is a) You are ironically behaving in the same manner as the Apple haters you rage about b) That the single biggest selling point of Apple products is the "cool" factor/status symbol. Hate to break the news to you pal and ruin your sense of self importance, but every man and his dog owns some sort of i-product these days.
The best option (IMHO) is to build your own system and use a linux distribution as your operating system. The advantages of this are that you have a really high level of control, you are going to suffer less from the upgrade cycle (replacing your machine when it starts struggling to cope with modern requirements), and at your budget (around £600) you are going to save a bit of money/get a better system. The downsides are that there are learning curves associated with both building your own system, and linux. There are plenty of resources available to guide you through both, but with hectic modern day life you may want productivity over learning something that may not be of any further value to you.
Pre-built systems are fine, and at the lower end of the price spectrum you will get better value than assembling your own PC. Obviously there is the big advantage of having a system ready to go out of the box, and you save time and headaches. It'll probably be bundled with some version of Windows, which is fine, as Windows has the massive advantage of being intuitive to most of us (through the environment - anyone who has ever used a PC will more than likely have a good familiarity with Windows).
Apple stuff is fine - I'm not really a hater or a lover. Mac's are pretty smooth, but they're just not really for me. I think 'intuitive' and 'easy' are words I'd use to describe, which is good. The downside is you pay a premium for the Apple logo - as long as you're happy with that then don't let it be a hurdle.
I guess (as others have stated) the best thing to do is check out the Apple store and see what you think, it's all personal choice at the end of the day.0 -
I changed to Mac 2yrs ago & have got on very well with it, in fact my son thought I would be asking him loads of questions, but I didn't worked it all out for myself!!:j
I am not praising one against another, as I didn't have a decent PC had my Dads old one.0 -

We haven't got anything i in our house even the young adults have bypassed them.
We get by just fine with PCs, Android and MP3s.
Haven't used a mac but have tried the rest and it is just a high priced logo and nice container.
I guess we must be in the minority though as Apple are immensely successful at brand marketing."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

no I bl00dy-well don't
however, I do on occasion have to waste time sorting out others in the household's iThings & iTunes

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Not at all, I was 'highlighting' that for someone to say something like 'macs are !!!!' with no substance suggests some unwritten reason such as jealousy or bitterness.
I use a pc just as much as a mac, maybe more in fact. But design wise, the mac has to be the one I use. Many man hours saved when I switched overe.0 -

the old "designers use macs" line?
what software and what spec of machine are using that "has" to a mac?
I too am a designer and have used both platforms in professional environments and there is now no actual need to use macs over pcs, it's something that was maybe the case 10-15 years agoThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
