Watering down milk.....

To be honest, it sounds a step too far rather than disgusting. My kids (three of them over six fot tall now) all drink a lot of milk at times and although the fridge is weighed down with thirty pints a time, I'd rather they were drinking milk than squash or fizzy drinks. None of them eat as well as they did when I controlled what they ate, so the last thing I want to do is water down the milk. We have semi skimmed and watered down full fat didn't go down very well with them although it was fine for cooking.0

I do this if I find full fat reduced
We usually drink semi.
It's great for cooking, but I do find it's a bit watery in tea.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
I often water down full-fat milk(IF I see it on whoopsie) and of course it makes it last much longer. I wouldn't be doing it with children though.
If you not in 100% control of what children consume during the day, at least it's one way of knowing what nutrients they are getting.
When I know my grandkids (7 and 10) are coming, I make sure that I have full-fat milk in for them. The youngest (1) has to have soya milk - funny how nobody ever uses up the last of that on her!0 -
I sometimes water down full fat; but I would absolutely never water down milk for kids as I believe they need whole milk for the nutrients.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I buy a 4-pint jug of full cream milk and dilute it 50/50. I've done this for about 6 months now after reading it on OS board, and so far no-one has commented. I agree it wouldn't be suitable for small children but when my 11 y/o DGD comes to visit she drinks it quite happily.
It freezes well, I just give it a good shake when it's defrosted and hey presto, 8 pints of perfectly acceptable milk ready for drinking, cooking etc., for the price of 40 -

I read about it here too, and the great thing is I carry home 2 pints of milk, but end up with 4!!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi Penelope Penguin, thanks for that :T
We don't have any children so just the 2 adults drinking the milk. Just thought it might reduce the almighty milk bill a bit. We use a pint of milk in 3 to 4 cups of tea!!  . Will have a look at the fat content and then try doctoring some and see how it goes!
Thanks0 -

I think 'gradually' is the way to go. Try watering by a third of water and increase until you find your tolerance level. I do half/half and find that's ok for tea and milky coffee.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

OMG Alligator - DH & I drink loads of tea evenings & weekends, but we only use a max of 2 pints IN A WEEK!* (When the DSK's come to stay though we get through about 4 pints a day......).
If you are used to semi-skimmed you'll probably find that whole milk watered down to 50/50 is OK (try it gradually though) but if I remember rightly when I checked it still has slightly more fat than the same volume of semi-skimmed.
*We do like our tea strong though, so we do get through a lot of teabags...good for the compost bin though! The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
