Being of Eastern European extraction, I make Estonian pirukas (aka. peroshkas or perogies) which are basically the same thing. I have a standard bacon and onion / white dough recipe that I won't mess with, but some alternative fillings could be interesting.
I've come across pirukas, but only as a larger pie that gets sliced. perogies I've only known as a boiled dumpling, though thinking about it I can see the similarities - obvious when its pointed out.0 -

Mouth duly washed out Monnagran. Poor choice of words, and me an English teacher too (except I teach Maths at the moment). I don't really find bread boring, I love it, but I can't eat too much of it unfortunately. I fall asleep if I have more than 2 slices.
My DS does a lovely rosemary and sea salt foccacia (I think that's what it is) and I will probably get Paul Hollywood's book too, I have some Am@zon vouchers to spend. I have never seen a big piruka, Nuatha, but funnily enough I was going to make some for a meal, soon. Normally I make little ones as party/buffet/nibbly food for high days and holidays.
Pirukas are supposed to be eaten with soup, but they are far too delicious for that. They also take quite a long time to make as they are small, little more than a mouthful.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
Hello All, have been lurking fairly regularly, sending hugs and good vibes to those stressed with trouble and feeling poorly. Some possitive news lately, good to hear about 'small victories' :j
Am de-lurking to ask for advice - I know some time ago shopping trolleys were discussed. After a dreadfull morning shopping in town, OH not being up to helping as he used to, and icy rain blowing in my face from all directions, I have come to the conclusion that I need a shopping trolley. So I turn for advice to the experts ... what specifcation can you recommend, and do I go for 2, 3 or 4 wheels? Are they water-proof? Think I need a Dot Cotton style plastic rain hood too:D0 -
GreyQueen and I both have Rolsers which are wonderfully light and sturdy. You can get them in jazzy patterns now but I wasn't allowed one (my DDs are tyrants and I should have ignored them because they refuse to let me take it when they are in any danger of being seen with me anyway)
2 wheelers are fine if you live on the ground floor, but if you have to go up a flight or two of stairs you can get special trolleys with wheels designed for that.
Mine is adequately waterproof for getting caught in the rain but I don't know how it would stand up to heavy and persistent rain as I'm lucky enough not to have to go out on foot in that sort of weather very often
hope this helps a bitIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
thanks nutty - I DID do it! Survived the first session of my training course and more than that enjoyed it imensely.
There is a woman on it who was on a previous course - she really irritated me, totally hogged discussions. This time round, I had a thought, maybe she is meant to be on my course so I can learn how to manage people I find difficult and felt ok with that. When I am trained I will be supporting people, some of whom I will find difficult I'm sure.
Other good news ...yes there's more today! One of the course tutors mentioned they are running a counselling skills course after Easter. I was thinking of getting on such a course in Sept through adult education college. This means I can start earlier and it will be free! It will also help me with the parent supporter role too. I am really interested in being a counsellor as a career but scared I won't have it in me. This course will be the first step and even if it isn't for me, it will be great on my CV and a useful skill for lots of other jobs.
Feeling :j and just wanted to share. This is the beginning of a new stage in life for me and a long time coming I can tell you! I am going to be really busy though.
off to pick up my boys now

Yippie!to having an enjoyable course SQ, and they do say 'if you want something doing, ask a busy person', so remember to book a little 'you' time so you get a chance to recharge properly.£71.93/ £180.000

Can I pick your collective brains please people.
A friend in RL lost her mum at the end of last summer. Even though it wasn't completely unexpected they were a close-knit family and she was pretty devestated. I know she found Mother's Day hard and it would have been her mum's birthday next week. She's already said she's dreading it. I was thinking of geting her a wee card and possibly some flowers just to say "thinking of you". Do you think it's a good idea or do you think it would it be too upsetting?
Thoughts please folks.
Edited to add: way to go SQ - sounds like today was successful in so many ways. Well done you!0 -
Thank you MaryB your trolley sounds lovely, though may be a bit dear for me. Think I will have a look at those I pass in the street and see if any appeal, before splashing out. My arms are still aching, and I'm sure I'll feel it tonight, so the light weight nature of yours does sound worth it.0

7ww- I would definitely do that, it will all be about distraction I would guess too. Could you go visit for coffee or have her to yours for lunch or something?0
