If you can confirm its a failed hard drive, remove the old hard drive and fit a replacement. I believe the latest version of OS X that you can buy installation media for is Snow Leopard at £14, you can upgrade this to Lion then Mountain Lion via the app store if you need to.
A USB caddy will cost around £5 and will allow you to access any recoverable files on the hard drive - most hard drive failures are software or affect small areas of the platter and data can usually be recovered.
The principle reason for suggesting a new hard drive is that with no backups you don't want to be trying to write any data to the old hard drive.

Any idea where I get the installation discs from? Does it matter I can't remember which version I'm on?

it's a very unfortunate situation for my dog I agree Molly.

All that matters is what the charity we adopted him from think. If they think our situation is ok for Alfie then he'll stay here with us. If they think that the situation is not acceptable for Alfie then he will go back to Dogstrust to be rehomed.

Before I go I will say that I am up at 6.30 every single morning to trek my dog out, I take him for off lead time at lunch time and a further walk of an evening by DH. We are extremely competent owners who have trained an exceptionally difficult breed of dog from DogsTrust. He was born and found in a ditch 1 week old. We have given him nearly 2 years of love, care and attention.

I have had to look for work, I have found work and will go from stay at home mam to full time worker. For that I cannot and will not apologise for.

I am saying no more on this because I'm not prepared to get upset over comments on MSE. All I will say is I will do my best for the ones I care about, like I always do.

You have nothing to apologise for Fuddle but there are people on this thread that should think before they post.

Of course you want to do the best for your dog but also your family.

Plenty of people work full time and have a dog, I am sure you will work something out.

As you say you have had to find work and you are doing the best thing by speaking to the charity that you got the dog from, they are in the best position to advise you over some random person on an internet forum that seems intent on making you feel bad about it.

Fuddle - I think you may have misunderstood, I took Mollys comment to mean that it was sad for Alfie if you had to give him back when he loves you all so much, rather than a criticism of your parenting him :)

Peanut - a good computer tech will have the right programs to re-install, most computers and laptops will have sticker with a serial number on that once the program is loaded can be used to authenticate genuine ownership.
I assume MACs are the same type of thing. If worst comes to the worst though, and you have to buy a new hard drive and a new operating program at least it will be alot less than a full new MAC. :)

Good luck hope all goes well for you.

Thank you Kidcat - that was my reasoning x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

It is this sort of cliquey response that really puts people off posting on this thread.

I am sorry for Alfie as, whatever, he will suffer. Just like many other pets have suffered with this tough recession.

  • FUDDLE my dear, you have no need to apologise for anything, you are being a responsible owner who is putting the needs of her dog before her own emotions, and for that you are to be highly commended, you are also being a responsible and sensible person for finding a full time job to help you and yours through these extremely trying times. I hope so very much that the Dogs Trust and yourselves can come up with a working solution that enables you to keep Alfie and allows him to be safe and stay with you. I so wish everyone in this world was as responsible and selfless, it would be a better place, Lyn xxx.

There is nothing cliquey about offering support to someone who is struggling with a difficult decision over her beloved pet.

Fuddle has had some fantastic news that she is delighted about as she should be but is still saddened about the fact that no matter what it will have an impact on her beloved dog.

If I took your two responses to Fuddles posts wrongly then I apologise to you.

At the end of the day I am sure that Fuddle will do what is best for Alfie no matter how much that hurts her.

    Congratulations fuddle!
I have a bit of a quandry here today - we need groceries and i'm not back at the hospital until next friday (in the city). Cannot decide whether to drive the 70 mile round trip to a supermarket for cheaper prices, or shop in our small co-op and save the petrol money and time - its at least an hour each way to supermarket.
Bad planning on my part - should have got a bigger shop last time i was out, but after sitting in the day ward for a wee while I just wanted to get home - silly I know.
