Elizabunny My youngest and I saw one of those "how it's made" programs and have not eaten icecream since. Did you know that they can make it entirely without cream and get away with it? They use vegetable fat, thickeners and emulsifiers along with whey and a bit of skimmed milk and sugar as well as flavourings. It was all processed till it looked like icecream but very unhealthy stuff. I am going to dig out my icecream maker this year and try to buy cream regularly to make it as well as make some from yoghurt.
We do have a local icecream parlour that make their own and they do use cream and other natural ingredients. Most of it is wheat free too. Only the ones containing biscuits are not. My ds worked there so he knows what they used to make it.

I have never been able to look at a sausage again after being taken round sausage production facility.

And ice cream, bread, cakes, meat pies, blergh. If I haven't made it or someone I know and trust, or it doesn't look like the bit of the animal after it's been dismembered I am NOT eating it.

Someone I think on this thread mentioned about bread and ingredients thereof - g00gle L-cysteine in bread will make your hair stand on end. Not for those of a weak disposition YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

As for the bread....OK that's it. No-one in this house ever eats shop bread again! Why do they think they can keep feeding us this crap and that we'll all just go "OK it's fine"

    DD1 passed her exam:j:j .

A quick look on Google and I was amazed at how easy it was to make myself.

the peel of one lemon, no white (easy to do with a potato peeler)
    150g sugar
    250ml water
    2tsp cream of tartar
a 3inch chunk of ginger peeled and finely chopped.

Lob that lot into a saucepan and boil for five minutes. Add the juice from your lemon, bring back to the boil and strain through a J cloth and pour into a sterilised bottle - I used an old wine vinegar bottle. The recipe says it will keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge (if it gets the chance)

I just mixed some up with fizzy water and it's pretty good. The recipe will need tweaking to her taste. I think it will need two lemons and a bit more ginger (it was a thin three inch chunk and maybe should have been a fat one) . That or leave it to infuse for longer before straining.

The ginger cost 15p, the lemon 20p from a street stall 5 for £1, the sugar was 12p by my calculation. Cheapo fizzy water and she can have as much as she likes. ONE bottle of the Waitrose stuff was over £2:eek: For that price difference, it will repay experimenting to get it right
congratulations to your DD on passing her exam. :T

Thanks so much for the ginger cordial recipe. DS really likes ginger beer but i don't buy it often because i am a skinflint. I will give this recipe a bash

I've been looking into home made sausages without the casing. Apparently if wrap the sausage in cling film then poach it for a little while, it helps with the sausage to keep it's shape ready for cooking.

My question is would the meat/leek/apple content of the HM sausage be ok whizzed in the food processor as opposed to a mincer? Instinct is telling me no, too gooee. What do you think (I don't have a mincer)

Fuddle I've done sausagemeat in a food processor and it's OK. Don't do too much at a time and do it in short bursts so it's still a bit textured
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

So relieved i make my own bread using a bread machine and therefore know precisely what is in each loaf.

I have been thinking of doing sausagemeat instead of sausages but often now having watched Nigel Slater I take the meat out of the casing and have it more like meatballs.

If anyone is into those expensive cereal breakfast biscuits there is a new range on offer in Tesco's from McVities £1 a box for 6 packets(4 biscuits in each)normally £2.79. Made from porridge oats and three flavours Oat and Honey, Red Berries(Cranberries and Raspberries)and Apples, Sultana and Cinnomon.

Soon(and it's cheaper)see I do learn, I'm going to chop some chunky vegetables and roast them in the oven, much cheaper than the prepared stuff in the SM even if reduced with a yellow sticker.

Had a lovely day here today with lots of sunshine but boy it was cold in the shade or in the wind.Worked online this morning while my OH went to pick up our friend who offered to help me get the wood delivery in and stacked. It made it a lot quicker and easier having someone fit to help me out. Although people were remarking on us getting the wood in this good weather I still think we are going to need it . I think we are going to get at least one more spell of freezing cold weather.

Glad to say we have not had any more earth tremors that I know of, although I have heard reports of them elsewhere in Greece. Apparently we have been put on alert for both earthquakes and volcanic activity... hoping we don't get either of them!

Going to have an easy night by the fire watching tv tonight. It feels like we might have a frost and the sky is really clear. We are going to a cheap curry night tomorrow...a meal and wine for 7 euros, although I won't be having the wine anyway..they might include a soda water for me with a slice of lemon.I have some lemons and ginger in the fridge so may have a go at the ginger cordial to see if I like it....thanks for the recipe.

Have a lovely weekend everyone xxxx
