Morning all,
Oh dear, we are going down to Yorkshire to collect my mum today: and OH has gone down with a stinking cold. I suspect I will do most of the driving and he will sit and nurse hot diluting squash all the way down.
Softstuff: I organize a local running group aimed at getting complete beginners running (we've had people who have *never* run before and taken them alll the way through to half marathons) so if you need a hand with a running plan let me know: it'd be a pleasure to do something in return for all the recipes and stuff;) Our beginners take it *really* steady. The very first session is just jog for 30s, walk for 30s and repeat 10 times. The whole point is that everyone finishes and thinks "I can do that" then we very slowly build up to 5k. Good luck - you can definitely do it.
Right, kettle on and I better go and see how sickly husband is doing.
Good luck to everyone braving the shops today. Have a good day all.0 -

Thank you so much
The couch to 5km plan at the bottom of this page is what I'm thinking of starting with: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
Does that look ok to you?
I have zero intention of marathon running mind! Hubby has gotten himself up to 5km quite easily, but he's already fitter than me. So he's agreed to scale himself back and help me do the plan, with timing and such. I got my shoes professionally fitted, a couple of very good sports bras. Is there anything else you'd recommend for a beginner?Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
That plan looks spot on. The main thing is to take it really steady for the 60s jog: you want to get to the end of it and be able to speak a whole sentence, and definitely not be gasping for breath: initially it will only be a tiny bit faster than brisk walking pace. And if you are going cycling with OH once a week initially I would swap one of the jogging sessions for cycling - so two jogs and a cycle a week would be perfect! And it looks like you've got the kit sussed: the only *really* important things are shoes and a decent bra. If you stick with it (and you will
) you will find you "need" other stuff - but really you don't initially!
Sorry - a bit of a witter: can you tell it's something I'm pretty passionate about!
Now I must get a wiggle on and hit the road to mum's!0 -

Thanks for that. Initially I'll do the jogging as on the plan, since to learn cycling is going to be more baby steps than actual riding. I have *no* balance and am terrified. The chap at the local bike shop is going to treat me as a pet project, but it's going to be very slow going and initially not involve pedals.... that is, if we're actually able to alter hubbys old bike to be a training bike for me (size wise and what not).
I'm certainly not lacking in determination for jogging, the only thing that could stop me is the tumour in my leg, but I'm cautiously optimistic on that. And I'll be sure to keep you updated and beg for tips if need be!
Thanks for your encouragement xSoftstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Morning all. I have just spent the last half hour reading and catching up on posts since yesterday. Osteoarthritus sounds horrible and i hope you all get some relief soon from the pain. I cannot imagine how you even begin to function with it.
Today it is really dark and dismal outside and it is raining! I want snow! I had to do an emergency tidy up in my garage yesterday as somebody gave us a leather sofa for my daughter and the garage had bikes strewn all over so no space to put it. Managed to tidy up in time though and the sofa is lovely. While tidying up though i found myself staring at the sledge and wondering if we will get to use it this year. I really hope so.
I met an old school friend whilst visiting santa and we had a lovely time catching up:T. He lives a long way from us and it was pure fluke that he was in the area with his son at the same time we were.
In other news, i have just sat on my little brother cos he was being an annoying little whatsit, hovering behnd me and poking me in the arm. He is only 14 though so i just make sure i sit on him and threaten to give him big sloppy kisses frequently and that seems to sort him out for five minutes:p. I have promised he can make dad some mince pies later so he is looking forward to that.0 -
Osteoarthritis is an auto immune disease, so body wide.
hi guys came by for a read and to wish you all merry christmas, but have to say osteoarthritis is NOT an immune disease, its a degenerative wear and tear disease, usually confined to joints which have had particularly high repetitive usage. Treatment is largely different to immune arthritises and you should speak with your GP about treatments to make sure your efforts are aimed correctly and your diagnosis is confirmed.
Have a lovely christmas and a great 2013.

Thanks WSC, my gp said its also not auto immune and is just wear and tear. So thanks for posting that, i wasn't on last night so i couldn't write it till today.
I found out i had oseterosrtrits about 18 months ago by two consultants at the the hospital. This was only after i snapped by knee cap in half by walking down some steps. Took six months of complaining for them to give me an mri and a disagnosis. My GP gave me lots of advice regarding fish oils, calcium etc otherwise i wouldn't have wrote it on here.I tend to ask professionals they opinions before i try anything.
I don't mean to offend anyone on here but i think if you go looking for illnesses and self - diagnose to you can make yourself more ill. My partner started looking a few weeks ago and lets just say OA can be a sytom of lots of things and the effects are not good. So i said to my OH stop looking it making me feel worse.
Pops you said you have counted up to 20 illnesses, is this through self diagnosis? If it is you really should see a GP and speak to them about it.
Another is, if any of them are self diagnosis you shouldn't be putting them on your DLA form. The symptoms yes but the not names of the issue, its counted as fraud and you can be prosecuted.0 -
Afternoon all
I have put made the remaining makeup bag for one of my nieces and have made material tops with nice Christmas material for the jams and chutneys I am giving as gifts. They look nice with the red and green bows I have added. I have now tidied my sewing machine and all of my sewing paraphernalia away and reclaimed the dining room :j.
Just need to put together the biscuit ingredients in a jar for my younger nieces then print out and laminate the recipes to attach to the jar with a wooden spoon and some Christmas ribbon.
Mum and I went to the Christmas party at my nan's care home. We had a good time and the residents seemed to enjoy themselves. The staff put on a good buffet, someones granddaughter sang and one of the staff did several readings. There were streamers, party poppers and crackers and a good time was had by all.
Off to start wrapping presents and finish writing the cards.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

Thanks Kezlou, I just put the symtoms down and how they affect me.
I never give them names unless I have been told by the medical profession and I have discussed all my symptoms with my Dr/consultant so if/when I send in reports once Christmas is out of the way or they talk with him(I gave permission)and he gives them a name I should be ok.
The only ones that I have named on the form are what I have definately been told that I have and on this occasion the forms I am filling in are for migration from one benefit to a different one.
So I hope all will be well but I have no idea what may happen next."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

No problem Kezlou, I have osteoarthritis in my lower spine and hips, and have recently been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis on top of this, which is an immune arthritis, and the treatments are different. I'd hate anyone to do more harm than good, or not improve when simple things may help. Hope things improve for you.
I don't read or post very often anymore - I found it was making me too introspective, which isn't always a good thing. I'm trying to simplify my life more and more, take all the changes to my health and well-being in my stride as best I can and stay optimistic.
have a great Christmas, and a positive 2013,
WCS0
