Don't know if any of you have a co-op pharmacy near you? The one in town today had some lovely things reditur in thuced for Xmas....I bought a lovely cath Kidston style rose print fleece as a pressie for £3, and a rather nice grey fleece shawl with pockets for £3 too, great for in the house! They also had buy 2 get one free on hair slides, a fiver off a £20 spend (think that may have just been for today) and a free nail varnish with any rimmel purchase. Staggered off with all my goodies! LOL!

I love Cath Kidtson, and anything shabby chic, all the vintage stuff...I painted all my sitting furniture cream about 3 years ago, it dont half make a room look lighter and comfy...........

Cath Kidston toiletries are very good, love her handcremes too, my DIL bought me her hand bag last xmas...................Im so old fashioned....

Great to see most of the old posters back....Sheila

DD is wrapping pressies as I speak - mind I am cleaning the bathrooms so she got the better deal. it is payment for picking her up from school on Monday as she had forgotten her train pass.

Off out with the "curry mums" tonight :j Our local pub does a curry and a glass of wine for £5.25 and it is only a 2 minute [STRIKE]stag[/STRIKE] walk from mine. It is a group of mums from the kids' primary school - tho few of us have kids at primary school anymore. Nice to keep in touch over a glass of wine. A bit like a modern day WI ;)

I was sat at home marking today and was reluctant to heat the whole house so i donned an extra fleece and pair of socks with a blanket over my knees, lit a candle and was toasty warm all day. Popping out to the loo or sort washing was yuck, but I couldn't believe how warm my kitchen was with one lit candle.

Right, clean the second bathroom and then pub
I wanna be in the room where it happens

re face cream and zero temperatures - my dsis lived in Alaska for a while and says don't put any cream with water content on your face when you go out as it will 'freeze' it ( and, so, make it red I presume?). She said she was advised to put va$eline on the kids' cheeks. I did that during the winter 2 years ago which was - temps here for so long and it did protect my skin. Haven't done this so far this year but am off now to put some oil on my face and have a nice mug of tea (3rd since I came in from work - aahh one of those evenings when tea is just hitting the spot!)
Keep warm all and (((hugs))) where needed.

Nutty - sorry you have had a difficult encounter, not what you needed after a sad day. Some people are so caring, others the opposite - who knows why? I just know that being caring and kind is the way to be and its best to spend 99% of your time with nice folk and 1% with the "not so nice but feel duty bound to see them" category. That's what DH & I have started to do this year though it isn't without its problems/heartache of course.

Glad DD is enjoying her work experience. She sounds a natural people person. You must be proud of her.

Fuddle -hope DD is ok now? no headaches? I also think serums are just fancy versions of facial oils, extra layer of moisturiser.

kidcat -well done on the wrapping front. Try not to fret about DS14 at school, it sounds like a wait and see thing. It might work out really well. Glad he enjoyed costcos - I've never been though tempted to join.

thanks kidcat and Mrs LW for your kind words. I will be fine once I get some things ticked off the list and what doesn't get done ain't gonna matter I know - its just the kids really, I want them to have a magical time. I try and make up for the lack of extended family around I think.

    on that subject.....drum roll.....

We actually have an invite to see family over Christmas! BIL has invited us over, we won't go Xmas/Boxing Day as we have got used to having just the 4 of us now and sounds daft, but we love including our cats - doesn't feel complete without them. Also they are healthy eaters (which I know is all good and they are not overweight as me and DH are) but even on Xmas day not a choccy, sweetie, nut or anything festive other than maybe Xmas pud on offer, not even for the kids  and portions are in keeping with austere times.... pretty small. I never know whether I risk taking something naughty along to eat as they won't eat it. They drink lots of wine so will take wine but I only have a glass and DH doesn't like it. They try and ply us with wine its funny as all we want are christmas chocs!:rotfl:

We are going later in the week and staying overnight - boys have never had a sleepover with another kid only us and they will be sharing with their 9 year old cousin. Not sure BIL and SIL will be prepared for the excited shrieking, our two are so much excitable than their kids who are better behaved but not as ...... erm fun.... as our two.

gotta go on verruca duty :D

  • Lanolin is fabulous for putting on exposed areas of skin - acts like petroleum jelly, but less 'nasties' in it. When it's really cold my cheeks get chapped in the gap between hat & scarf, but lanolin keeps them nice & soft. I find it less greasy than petroleum jelly as well, seems to be better absorbed.

Black ice again here. DD slipped and banged the back of her head. I kept her with me today just incase. A friend's nephew has also slipped and banged
His head. He's had to go to hospital because he can't remember anything. The paths outside of school are no longer gritted. The scho doesn't buy the grit and the council aren't gritting any walk ways. At least the school bus didn't slide into the school gates today. It did yesterday. Public safety isn't a concern in austere times eh?

Mum did that twice that I know of and so easily done. Once at the bottom of our street and near where her Mum(My Gran)lived so that's around 18 years ago. Another time getting out of a taxi outside...the Dr's surgery.

Always a worry and easily done. Less icy tonight and yet I took a tumble around an hour ago almost at the same spot as Mum all those years ago and no matter how I tried not to fall...I did but onto my knees and on the grass verge. If anyone had seen me trying not to fall, I probably looked drunk. I don't think I can blame the ice, just lost my balance. You did the right thing keeping an eye on your daughter, hope your friend's nephew will be ok.

Sadly there are too many stories where this has been fatal. Even in the home so on hard ground outside...I will try not to go out unless it is necessary.

    Evening all

Brrrrrr it's been a chilly one here, the ice was so amazingly pretty this morning.

I got loads done this morning as I left DH to sleep on for a few hours. We popped to a friends for coffee and then picked up a bit of shopping then came home and between us (his brain my Braun) the new heating timer has been fitted and we can now have heating on before I stumble down stairs wrapped in multiple layers to click a switch. £31 well spent, don't want to know what a heating engineer would have charged!

Friend gave us 8 packs of sausages/sausage meat from her farmers market swaps, lovely local free range pork so lots of meals sorted and I shall make some lovely stuffing too. She needed freezer room and I was happy to help!

Face cream, I hate central heating and how it makes my skin feel. This year i'm sticking to a face scrub every other day and bucket loads of Nivea (the basic white cream) which I apply morning, noon and night (I don't wear makeup so can just plaster the Nivea on) and plenty of water to drink during the day.

Fuddle - sorry to hear you've been having issues at the school, The move can't come soon enough eh? Hope it all goes well for you all x

DD1 has broken up from college now so will utilise her talents with the iron and duster!

Pooky - how easy was the timer to fit? Ours is working fine but it has settings to be a timer and the usual on or off, water on or off type thing but I would like a plus one hour button, my mum has one and its so good as it saves forgetting to switch it off which OH is prone to do.

Having a funny day today and struggling to find the right word for things. :)
  • Sorry i know i just nip in and out of this thread. But i feel it's the only way i can vent without posts being 'moved'
Just found out two of Elizabeth's classmates (youngest dd) have been off this week with chicken pox.....she hasn't had it!..... what is the bloomin chances she has it Christmas day? (think the incubation period is around 14 days)
On an os theme have loads of food in the house since oh's job finished but my i'm using an awful lot of gas and electric and not even enough to keep us warm without extra layers!
Enough moping anyway, hugs to all in need of them x
I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!

    Total £56

Kidcat, it was fairly easy once we'd sussed which wires were which, the new one came with a set of instructions for different makes of timer and how they're wired, once we'd sussed what we had (the old one was 30+ years old and no name on it) we could work out how to wire the new one....logic prevails. We can now have water and heating independent of each other which we couldn't before!

We got this from the place that "fixes screws" which was quite informative as to what system it was for etc.
