We harvested enough new potatoes & carrots to go with some YS steak, and I steamed a handful of beet leaves, lovely meal.

Hester, when can I eat the beet leaves? before I harvest the beets? and how do I know when the beet is ready?

Byatt I know nothing about beet leaves, but just wanted to say what a lovely photo of Polo. He looks so relaxed.

Weather on the hill is lovely, which is good since I have had an alien cat calling around and my two don't like it. He/she even came in the house the other night (yowling). Someone (don't know who) had sprayed the chair in the conservatory. Cover washed and dried on the line today so all is now smelling a lot sweeter!

Thanks RPP, he was lying on my bed on his back, just so relaxed when I went up to him. I'm biased of course, but he's a lovely boy.

Byatt When I say I know nothing about beet greens, obviously I know beetroot do have leaves! Having checked my veg book, I now know how to cook them (although I don't have any!). I would guess you would need to harvest the beetroot at the same time as the leaves are needed to keep the beetroot growing.

When to harvest your beetroot would depend, presumably, on how big you like them?

Ooh I'd like to know about beets too please Hester, as the children sowed some seeds a few weeks ago, and a miracle has occurred, we have little beet leaves! I have never grown anything like this so am a complete beet beginner.

Iain Banks has died today, one of my favourite authors, very sad. His publishers Little, Brown brought forward publication of his new book when he announced he had terminal cancer,but not far enough unfortunately, it comes out in 11 days. : (

I thought the photo of Polo was great and made me feel good...but did not realise the connection until others posted. Perhaps one day I will have a companion of the animal kind again...someone is trying to persuade me to have a fish tank.

That chutney recipe was the easiest I could find...so happy it fit the bill...

Hubby was thinning out the beetroot and carrots, the carrots were big enough to eat as baby carrots, the beetroot weren't ready, so I steamed the leaves

Evening all.

Todays kind of been a nice and refreshing day after a very tough free weeks.
Managed to get loads done with OH. Was nice spending the day with him were we are fighting & disagreeing over something or another (IE: Debts & bills.)

MIL called today, She explained the FIL is due to get his lump sum pension payments and they want to give OH & I the deposit for a mortgage! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

We are totally in shock right now because we have been dreaming for so long to try and making everything right and nothing seems to be giving in, this phone call today has knocked us for 6!
Only condition for the money is that we stay close, So if there is any issues, problems ect they can still get to us quickly!

We understand that this is still a long while off, Mainly because we WANT to get as debt free as quickly as possible & Because of my depression & other mental illness, I want to get "as better" as quickly as I can to get back to work.

Well I must say thats very kind of them to give you some much needed help.....:T..But will you be able to get a mortgage if you have debts ?, if you cant get a mortgage just yet its handy to have the money in the bank ready and waiting for such time.........

Weve had dam cloud here all day, its made it feel slightly chilly........

I had kip in the summer house today with the dogs for an hour, ohh it was so comfy, and just listening to the birds and pond water was all that was needed......:D, a lovely relaxing Sunday........
