Can you help me with this idea?

I would like a pot, quite large, for the patio. I would like it to be perennial (I that the right word? I would like the flowers/plants to come every year) but also be interesting every season. Is that possible? How can I plan it? :D

DH watching Skyfall. I'm bored! Who said Softstuff was officially better then Bond? Actually, were us Softstuff. I haven't seen her for a while. If you're reading :) hello

You need to buy ,well id get 2 very large plastic pots, I think they would be about £9 each, have what colour you want but the terracota ones looks quite nice..........

have them at the path of the patio, get 2 large bags of compost, Jonn onnes is good , but I like the miracle gro ones, you have so much to choose from for the plants, its really personal preference, I like Verbena Boneriensis, they flower from July right through to November, and get to 5 feet tall, which doesnt matter in a big pot because thay are "stalky" and flower at the top........ Put them in the middle with say geraniums on the outerside .........

The bees and butterflies will stick to the the verbena like glue, I always garden for wildlife........

They are perennial but dont like drying out so you will have to water every other day.......

Or you could plant up some heather and lavendula, they dont want too much water , theres just so much on offer , go to your local nursery and take a look, you will find something you like , best to check on line first how long the flowering season will be for whatever you like, you may not like what I do.......Also Veronica, jacobs ladder, geums, thay are all perennial, the list is endless and nows the time to plant up pots...........

At least with growing plants in pots you can take them with you if you move........

Beautiful day here , sunny blue skies and warm.....

Im taking hubby on some back roads and park up with a sandwich , because at 12.46 eaxactly, we have a fly past over an old air base, they are flying a sally B 52, 2 spifires, and 2 other fighter planes which for the life of me I cant remember what sort:eek::eek:........

Hubby loves war and planes, be nice only for a few mins but be nice , so off to get few sandwiches and drink and catch you all later....Sheila:)

    Morning Everyone!

As expected, it's pouring down here today, so indoor jobs for me. I have just made 90 fat balls for the birds, a messy job but a bit like making sand pies so quite enjoyable!

I would second the idea of a Bay tree, but if you can afford it I would suggest buying a standard or half-standard Bay - like a lollypop. This will be more expensive, but will give you a lot more space at the bottom of the pot, and light for the other plants. Bay throws up lots of suckers from the bottom and the foliage is very thick, so there would not be much light if you plant a standard bush type. I use bay leave all the time in cooking, it is one of my favourite herbs, I love the aromatic smell of the fresh leaves.

The beastly bird baffle is still working well, although a jackdaw got trapped yesterday, he had worked out how to get in at the bottom, squeezing himself up the pole, but then did not have the brains to go back the same way. Luckily we could see him on the cam, so I went to free him. I had a quick look at him before I let him go - close up they are very handsome, with piercing blue eyes and glossy black feathers. I just wish they didn't eat so many peanuts! We sealed the bottom up properly so they cant do it again, but funnily enough they have steered clear since!

There is a young squirrel that is still just small enough to squeeze through the mesh, and has been in this morning and stuffed himself - he will get a shock one day, he will eat too much and not be able to squeeze out again :D.

We have roast chicken for dinner as the forecast has been bad for a few days so I was able to plan it for a chilly day, so something nice to look forward to!

Mar - I'm not sure the Norwegians do stay sane, aren't the Scandinavians known for being a depressed lot, resorting to drink to get through the very long dark winters? And no nation whos national dish is rotten fish can be called sane, can they? :rotfl:

  • Hi SHEGAR It's probably the Lancaster and the Hurricane with the Spitfires, they usually do the memorial fly bys as a group. I love the sound of the engines, it's like nothing else and instantly recignisable. We live close to where the Spitfire was designed and the best experience we had plane wise was a few years back when there were 7 of them flying to mark an anniversary of the planes' manufacture and the 7 were flying over the local airport as we were lucky enough to be driving past, they are so beautiful in flight, it was magic. Hope you and OH have a lovely trip out and that he enjoys the planes, enjoy, Cheers Lyn xxx.

It's a pretty good day here so far although rain is forecast, A bit windy but still ok.

Thanks for the tips about Bay trees Mrs C, I am hankering after one for my my birthday at the end of June, being 60! :D Not sure if it will be me that buys one or someone else, :rotfl:who am I kidding, it will be me. :p

Margaret54, glad you could get the results on the day, I understand about needing someone to remember what the consultant said, many a time my DD has said "but he/she said this or that..." Did they? I ask! My memory issues are odd because it's things like the name of the prime minister (I have to remind myself often), and I don't learn things as well as I used to, often times, stuff just goes in one ear and out the other. I remember "feeling" things better than practical.

Have a good day out Shegar with hubby.

Hope all have a lovely day. :)

    It was a good flypast, Sally B 52, 2 spitfires, P 47 thunderbolt, mustang.......

So good on a open back road with all the yellow rape in the fields , sunny, windy and warm, and the sound of those engines was brilliant, they went round just the twice and away they went.........

Hubby loved it, he got very emotional, did wonder whether id done the right thing in taking him, but he was in the army for 14 years and he loves planes .......
He can go from fits of laughter to crying within seconds since the stroke ........

Ive been pottering today, thats just about all the strenght ive got, im too knackered to cook so its something very quick for tea, probaly cheese on toast and yoghurt ,then hubby off to bed , then I shall get this ready for the morning.....Sheila
  • Glad you both had a lovely afternoon and glad DH enjoyed the fly past, tears and laughter are often joined, but if he enjoyed it more than it upset him it's a good result!!! Cheers Lyn xxx. Whatever you make for supper have copious amounts of TEA then the world will be back in its rightful place!!!

Shegar, glad you had a good time, I was mad keen on planes since reading Biggles! Saw a programme the other day, not sure what it was called where the built a sopwith camel and a Fokker to see which was the best fighting plane. I was in my element and brought back memories of building airfix Camel planes.

I am sure you did the right thing in taking hubby, I know when I'm emotional and something really touches me, I can laugh and cry at the same time, they are so intertwined and it's good to be in touch with those feelings as they make me feel I am still alive.

Weather turned but not rained yet, it was a tractor steam rally at the farm shop and as a result dozens of tractors have passed my door, some with trailers and people inside! Remmeber the days when it was common place, going to the Sunday School Treat on back of lorries, but not usually seen now.

I've been re-arranging the kitchen, trying to make the most of the space. Also selling on FB as a way to raise some pennies for the rent. What happens when you run out of things to sell?? :rotfl:

well what a lovely afternoon weve had here. It has been so nice being outside all day. I have ventured to the shed of doom, its suppose to be a summerhouse. I emptied everything, despidered and then resorted. All the contents are for car booting, so must get organised and do a couple.

All the rubbish I could fid at the time has been taken to the tip, and the old clothes to the salvation army recycle clothes bank.

Our neighbour one side of us is elderly, OH popped round with the lawnmower and cut her back garden area/lawn. Its nice to be able to help, and all it cost was time. Our neighbours the other side, only seam to want to damage things, like our fence .....

I have done 5 loads of washing, and the last is still in the line blowing in the breese that has just started.

SHEGAR, we are lucky as we often get plane flybys near us. About a good 10min drive away there is a bombing range practice area. They use the windmill in the village as landmark, or so the locals say!!

I hope everyone has managed to enjoy some sunshine over the weekend, back to work tomorrow.

    Take care x

Oh wow what a lovely day Shegar we have only been privelleged to have a flyover here once when they had celebrations for the battle of britain I think it was and it was so wonderful.

I'll never forget it and it was made all the more poignant by the fact that where I live was a functioning airfield during the war and many of the pilots based here lost their lives..

The planes were so low we could see the pilots almost and it really hurt our ears but a truly memorable day.

Our roads are all named after the planes that flew from here and the people that built them :D
