Afternoon toughies
SQ - DS is on his 4th lunchbag already and not even finished year 1 yet, so I sympathise - they definitely lasted longer for my older kids!
FUDDLE - glad I'm not the only one who refuses to wash once-worn non-dirty clothes! DD chops and changes clothes all day long (real clothes VS dressing up), and I'm fed up of sniffing to see what's clean and not.
Was talking to a mum at school this morning whose mum had Alzheimers before her death; she said that was the cause of death on the death certificate, and she was pleased as the more people that are said to have died from it directly will mean more research and (maybe!) more help and support for patients and their families. My mum may well be diagnosed with the very early stages of dementia soon, so despite the worry, this might be a ray of hope for the future. If she goes the same way as other family members, it will be hard work, so the sooner we get a diagnosis the sooner we can prepare ourselves for whatever comes.
Re bug repellent, I can also vouch for the Avon Skin So Soft, and it's much cheaper than proper repellent sprays.

Just tried the skin so soft, no new bits and I have been out the back a while. Its also soothed the bites I had, thank goodness, they were driving me mad.
Have just been working out how to grow all my seedlings on in the greenhouses as the weather seems set again this year to be lousy. I think the beans will do ok outside and the courgettes but am not wasting my energy setting up the frame for cucumbers after all I lost last year so they can stay inside. Maybe this is how I will have to grow stuff from now on, have another little greenhouse still in the box so will be putting that up too. We bought the bigger one in a sale, mum got me a little one and the other 2 were a gift and found in a skip so the outlay will be easy to balance if I get some veg as opposed to no veg from the garden. Soft fruit is doing well and I have blossom on one of my baby apple tree's :j
Oh well back to the sewing machine for me - no rest for the wicked.Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Wish I'd read about the Avon Skin So Soft BEFORE I went away. One of my bites has blistered & is about the size of my thumbnail!!! AND I've got some SSS in my cupboard - groanSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

The skin so soft did'nt work for me in Aus. I got eaten alive by horse flies and had the scabs for weeks after i got home0

I think the problem is boultdj that he has been there 16 years, judging by the payouts people who have been there less than 10yrs are getting he will cost them alot to be rid of. So if they can mess him about they are hoping he will walk out or take a job elsewhere to save the pay off.
I have said he should get the union rep back in there and say he wants a clear outline of all their options including what a redundancy payout would look like.
One of the others going has been paid in lieu of notice, the union expected OH to be the same, he wasnt though, and they have said he has to work the full three months notice.
As far as I was aware as he is paid weekly he is only required to give/receive one weeks notice so this doesnt ring true.
The rotten begger's!!
If he can keep his temper and not tell 'em to stuff it,then by the sound of it he should cost 'em money to get rid of him and he's got a bit of time to apply for other job's, hummm........ wounder if you can still tell council 6/8? week's before you retire/redundent so the rent/council tax benefit can start from the first week of not having a wage? I could well be wrong, but I'm sure that's what my step dad had to do when he got made redundent£71.93/ £180.000 -
MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »FUDDLE insect repellents - look for something with DEET in, it's the most effective that I know of. I prefer a spray as I can spray my head, I find they get stuck in your hair yukkk!!! and your ankles and feet in sandle wearing weather, if we ever get any. For around the house, citronella candles/oil in an oil burner is good as they really don't like the small, and the essential oil is good to pop on pulse points on people too as again, they don't like the smell, but it's not enough to keep them away completely so you need the repellent too, Cheers Lyn xxx.
I get bitten really badly every year by mosquitoes, and I end up scarred , I have taken piriton, but to no avail, so I end up at the drs being prescribed Hydrocortisone tablets and cream........
Like you say Lyn, always but something that contains DEET, anything else is a total waste of money.........I was told that by the dr........I get my prescriptions free so thats why I go to the drs.....
Also like ginnyknit said Avons oil is brilliant for insect deterrant too.........
I went to town this morning, dont do that very often as the town is 23 miles away, so I went into milletts, I needed a waterproof,/ windproof , jacket, they got sale on, I tried quite a few Peter Storm ones on, but couldnt seem to get a decent fit, so I tried a Berghaus one on , well that was it, I bought it........You certaintly get what you pay for.........
It wasnt an impulse buy as I had been looking for a lighter jacket for wet , windy spring days , but people dont throw decent wetproof gear to CS s.......So ive got it now and it will last me years ......It was £60. already got £30 off....WOW still seems alot of dosh to me.........
When I got home I had to take the dogs out so I wore it down the beach and it felt very comfortable and kept the wind out.........I do feel a bit guilty , but then again some people choose to buy a £200 mobile phone , where phones dont bother me........
Little bit chilly here today , but it is dry, had a little rain overnight , ground needs it.......Ive done some gardening, but things are a wee bit slow this year...........Ive got birds nesting everywhere in the garden , so nice to hear the bird song with the window and doors open.......
Dam bird food cost a arm and leg, and they seem to go through so much, we are plagued with starlings, they are so greedy...................
Got loads frogs and newts in the pond, breeding like rabbits .......
Right , now time to get hubby undressed and into bed ...Sheila0 -
Shegar - I react badly to insect bites & I just found something called Mosquito Milk that has Deet in it. Fingers crossed that it will do the trick for me
Your Berghaus jacket was worth every penny - I've had mine for about 15 years! Someone told me years ago that if you buy something expensive & wear it a lot then the cost per wear works out cheaper than a cheap item worn once - I always use this to justify an expensive purchase................:)
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Shegar - I've had my Berghaus for many years - still looks new. Such a fab buy - well done.
savingqueen - please speak up about your views re the course. I was a lecturer for years and if students don't speak up about things, sometimes lecturers/ tutors assume it's going ok. There should be regular feedback sessions so please let him/ her know.
Lovely evening here. Been out for a fab meal at a really good Italian restaurant. It was spur of the moment and certainly made our hearts sing.0 -
I've also have a Berghaus jacket - and it's at least 20 years old, reckon I've already had my moneysworth with it and it'll probably see me out!
Also .. after serious experiments I've now discovered what controls the weather - it's the "Start" button on my washing machine
Let me know if you're ever worried about droughts (unlikely, but you never know).Normal people worry me.0 -
This is what I use for mozzie repellent when we go sailing - LOTS of mozzies in rivers!!
Mix together equal parts of citronella, lavender and clove essential oils (clove can be a skin irritant, so for your kids you might prefer equal parts citronella, lavender, geranium and rosemary). Pop a few drops of each in a spray bottle, top up with water, add a tablespoon of vodka and spray on your skin, hair and clothes as often as you need to.
This really works and actually smells quite nice. I get little plastic spray bottles from the chemist for about £1 and they are perfect.
The other thing that works, strangely enough is a homoeopathic remedy called Ledum.. I have always been a cynic about homoeopathy but when I was being driven to distraction by itchy oozy bites (I am very allergic - think tennis ball sized lumps) I tried this and it WORKED
Apologies if my spelling is bad tonight, my eyes are playing up. Hope I've picked up most of them with spellchaeck. The eye drops I have to use after my cataract op are irritating my cornea and the eyesight in one eye is very blurred. Fortunately not too worried as I know it will settle down once I stop the eye drops tomorrow. One of them is like putting surgical spirit in your eye:eek: LOTS of bad language.
But it has made SUCH a difference. Only problem so far was yesterday when I got a thorn in my finger which then broke off flush with the surface of the skin. Because I don't have a new glasses prescription yet I am making do with cheapo reading glasses and they weren't good enough to enable me to dig it out. So I thought I'd wait a day as splinters usually work their way out. But it was beginning to get inflamed so I went to the minor injuries unit and they dug it out for me. Not surprising it was sore, it was half a centimetre long and completely buried. I asked them how often you are supposed to have a tetanus booster and their response was basically, if you have to ask you need a booster.
They said they would do it in my left arm as I am right handed "because it might be a bit sore". Medical speak for bloomin' agony!
When I got home I was telling the DDs "at least I won't get Lockjaw" They had never heard of that as a traditional name for tetanus, which I thought showed how times have changed. When I was young, it was rare but not unheard of. Now it is virtually unheard of. Long may it remain so!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
