The debt will still have to be repaid.

    Oh dear,

Both of Comet and Comet auction have gone down with no date for revival.

Also the guardian are reporting that Comets distribution centre (which is btw run by a 3rd party) in Skelmersdale had supplier lorries turn up yesterday (queuing to get into the estate) to reclaim stock from Comet.
  • Hi all

Its the staff i feel sorry for, and my home town (Hull) as a whole. IF Comet do go into administration 250 people will lose their jobs at the head office (in hull), all this after the comet call centre closed earlier in the year. Thats a lot of people fighting for so few jobs.

Also from what i hear/read in the local media, the poor staff found out listening to local radio, before they even got into work.

The only thing to be worried is with your warranty, if it's a standard 12 months then unfortunately you wont be covered if anything goes wrong with it within that period if Comet do cease trading, look for alternative insurance schemes
Most twelve month warranties are supplied by the manufacturer, so they will continue.

You will of course lose any rights against Comet under Sale of Goods Act it they don't survive.

Ahh wealdroam but there lies the problem, you have no legal right against the manufacturer if anything goes wrong and you are at the mercy of individual manufacturers as you have to abide by their T&C which may include postage charges. And that is if Comet didn't negotiate a lower price from them in order to remove the manufacturer from being the repair agent.

My understanding is that at the time of purchase, one buys the product together with a manufacturer's twelve month warranty.

Yes of course warranties come with their own terms, but it would certainly be interesting if for example Indesit were to say "sorry we cannot provide the warranty service that you have paid for because Comet have gone bust".

Have you ever seen or heard of that happening?
  • I went to Comet this morning to spend a gift card I had. Turned up shortly after 9am to find a notice on the door stating that they wouldn't be opening until 1pm today. Would have been nice if they had communicated that on their website!

I wanted to go watch a film anyway, so stopped by on the way home at about 2pm. Then when in there, trying to find something to buy they suddenly (with 5 minutes to go) announced that they were going to close at 3pm! Again no communication anywhere at all about that :-(

The staff said that they would be open over the weekend. Perhaps they closed early to mark down stock?

It would be nice if they put the customer first and communicated what was happening. As others have pointed out, their customer service has always been atrocious; In retrospect I'm surprised they lasted this long.

Anyone would think they dont want people to spend the gift cards and are clearing all the stock back to the warehouse for collection by the suppliers who are asking for it back ;)

Our local comet is closed for the rest of the day, there are notices on the door saying they will be opening tomorrow.
