Comet going into administration?

  • Speaking as the other half of a Comet employee I would like to thank all those defending them. Despite no knowledge of their future employment they are still turning up for work and trying hard. The abuse from customers is regular and they are taking it. I came online to look for advice for us and all I have found is advice for people who can not use their gift vouchers, all I want is reassurance that we will be able to keep our home. So anyway, thank you for being the only people who seem to give a d*mn about the people affected by this.

Take no notice of the posters (or should I say postER) being abusive about Comet employees (and anyone working in retail!). They are ignorant and not worth your time.. Anyone with an ounce of decency will have sympathy for people like your OH. I really hope things work out for you eventually.

I know just how you feel. I was made redundant by Comet a year and a half ago when they got rid of their service centres. I was very very frightened for my and my families future.

Please please take heart and I know it will be hard. There is life after Comet, your OH may need to look to a different type of job now. I worked for them for ten years, they were very good employers. I am very very saddened by the news as I still have many many friends still employed by Comet up and down the country.

    Good luck.

I've been on the phone to my bank (Nationwide) to see if they could do a chargeback, but was told that that was only possible on credit cards; but I've read on several websites that you can do a chargeback with a Visa debit card... so no idea.

Second time a company has gone bust and I've lost money (£250 this time). I wonder if I'll be able to get a credit card through my bank even though I'm unemployed (student). I've had my debit card long enough with multiple direct debits set up, always paid everything.

If you had your bank account with a bank that caters to students then you could probably get a student credit card with a small credit limit. However as Nationwide don't really cater to students they probably wouldn't let you have one without proof of income/employment.
  • The Comet website on Facebook, says their new look website will be available from 28 November 2012, with Condition Gadgets UK as a new member of their fresh retail family. It looks like Comet and new associates will operate through the Internet only. I wonder if they will re - employ any of their staff who will be made redundant by this move? Will they help previous customers with existing problems?

If your debit card has a Visa logo on it then there is the same chargeback protection as on a visa credit card.

As you say paypal is the sticking block here. As they are not the supplier, only the money movement company.
Another issue is while your debit card is linked to the PP account. How was the payment taken by PP.
A DD or a debit car payment. This will make a lot of diffrence.

Personally we do chargeback PP debits for stuff like non reciept. Some we win, some we lose. Never done one for faulty goods. Or non reciept of refund.
So you can but ask your bank to try for you if it was a debit card transaction.
If it was a payment taken by DD. Then not sure if you could request a DD indemnity. Not in my skill area. Best guess would be a not able to.
Never ASSUME anything its makes a

The official facebook page says nothing of the sort. The last posts were on 27th October and they were just advertising items.

There is a new facebook page started a few days ago which says they are the new Comet - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Comet-UK/502006336490463?fref=ts. I think they are just trying their luck, not sure why you would go to the trouble and expense of rebranding Comet again when they have only just done so.

Any new company now have absolutely no obligations to previous customers, thats the whole point of a company going into Administration. Sometimes the new company will step in as a gesture of goodwill so as to be seen as offering good customer service but they by no means have to.

I don't see how Condition Gadgets fits in with Comet but the website is well dodgy, no physical contact details at all.
  • I guess insurance replacement cards which are now probably worthless will be refunded / swapped by the issuing insurance company. Except we will have to wait for confirmation that the cards will not be honoured, and if the advertised fire sale goes ahead there will be no stock to spend them on anyway !

Direct Line (RBS group) did most of their electrical claim settlements via Comet vouchers, offering 20% less if you insisted on cash, and they are one of the biggest insurers around. Must be thousands of people holding Comet cards issued by them to put right the trauma of a burglary.
