i was going to add that its worth spending a little on a good makeup mirror with a light(boots no7) and a set of brushes &if you are good at eyebrow shaping then a tweezer aswell. These tools will help you to apply makeup in a better way. After that have fun buying/trying&using new products slowly-max factor foundation is a good &currently halfprice in boots.Bourjois makeup is apparently chanel makeup in disguise as is boots no17(no7 in disguise). Its worth having a lipgloss&lipstick, a mascara and some light blusher to start off with and then add as you go along. In summer the makeup companies often do special edition compacts with abit of everything which also works out cheaper and helps you agin confidence with colour(boots no7 are currently doing one).
Don't forget your nails aswell-its worth trying out new colours on nails to see how you like them and then go a bit wild with eyeyshadows-makeup should be fun and enjoyable, its best to accentuate our good bits instead of concentrating on features we don't like!

    Hey Peakma,
I'll come back in a bit when I have more time-just getting kids to bed but I have 17 years behind one of those makeup counters (and NO, I didn't wear too much orange makeup, lol) I am also trained as a makeup artist...

OOh please may I butt in?

I too rarely wear make-up, though when I was younger I wouldn't leave the house without the full works ;).

I think it's when the children come along (I had 3 in 4 years) that any thoughts of spending more than 1½ minutes a day in front of the mirror fly out the window.

My biggest problem is having very thin eyebrows (over-plucking in my youth) which I hate pencilling in, they look so false. Is there a better way?

Thanks to Donny Osmonds Mad Fan for the tip about the MF Flawless Perfection, I shall definitely have a look at that if it covers large pores.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

    Hi Peakma,
I hope you don't mind me butting in here-only makeup is the one area I feel I actually know quite a bit about-I love it and have worked in the industry for over 20 years now...(eek!)

First of all, make up should not be scary, it's there to make you feel happy and comfortable. NEVER worry about going to any cosmetic counter-trust me, the girls may LOOK scary but generally they are all very nice, honest. (I should know, I was one for 17 years, lol) I am self employed now (selling Virgin Vie cosmetics and doing wedding makeup etc) so I'm still involved in the industry.

As far as spending money is concerned-well, there's things I don't mind spending money on ie. GOOD foundation and mascara but theres things I'm not bothered about (like the newest fashion colours of eyeshadows) Remember, make up is not a tattoo so it will wash off! Never be afraid to try something. I won't go into recommending loads of names because I do find it a very personal thing-ie. I LOVE VV foundation and Estee Lauder as well but I HATE E.L skin care...I love Clarins skincare but hate their makeup! (that's me personally) Lots of people swear by YSL Touche eclat but I know there s other companies that do a better CHEAPER version ;) It''s like fragrance, everyone likes their own thing. One good thing about either having a VV party is you will get to try everything before you buy, same as going to a counter. A good consultant worth her salt will beg for a chance to sit you down and do a makeover. Half the time I was bored STIFF!

Makeup does not last-I would seriously just bin the old stuff you have a start fresh. All items now have a use by date on them as well (Gov't legislation?)

When you either go to a counter or have a VV/Body shop person do a makeover for you, ask them for tips. NEVER let them try foundation on your hand. You don't wear it there! Go outside and have a look in natural light as well if you can. If they have the facility, ask for a sample. We had to be very careful with that because you are supposed to give a full list of ingredients with samples so we were not allowed to fill up any old pot you brought in, sorry...

I would advise more on makeup if I saw you. As for skin care, make sure who you do eventually speak to asks you loads of qustions like: how does your skin feel in the morning, when/if does it get shiny, what products do you currently use, how do you like to take care of your skin? lifestyle questions like are you outside a lot etc. then they will be able to properly recommend a range of products. If you don't lie them, tell them! (ok, not that I'm pushing VV or anything but everything comes with a 30 money back guarentee)

Good luck and let me kow if you want any more help!

    Bunny

    ps
Good brushes are worth their weigth in gold. And if you have a VV party this month you get double commission so you could get it all free...How MSE is that!?

    Consultant31,
Maybe consider tattooing your eyebrows. I'm thinking of doing it myself as I have space ones-I had chicken pox when I was 18 and they left scars in my eyebrows I colour in everyday...

My friend had it done and it looks lovely!

    Hiya

If you are geting older, be careful with foundation. Even at 30, Dame Barbara Cartland is NOT a good look.

I use Estee Lauder Double Wear, (expensive but worth it, I use so little it lasts for ages) diluted with a good moisturiser (pour a tiny drop of both into the palm of your hand and mix...sheer, but it lasts all day) then smile and put a tiny dab of cream blusher on the apples of your cheeks. If you put it under your cheekbones it makes you look gaunt. This way is very 'girl on a summers day' :)

Buy some dark eyeshadow, Rimmel is good, and just put a tiny amount on the outside edge of your eyelid..... near your lashes.....blend it in so it just accentuates your eyes.

    Brown mascara....

Lip liner...again, Rimmel Pink is great, very natural, and lips look too nude without it. Just trace a faint line over your natural lip line, then fill in with gloss or your favourite shade.

    Gorgeous :)

You havent really said what you want by wearing make- up.
Is it that you want to hide certain areas ( your pores ) but do you have any redness,un- even skin colouring or tone etc ? Whats your best facial asset - your eyes, mouth or cheeks ?
I might not recommend foundation ( except for eveing wear ) if you are not used to it and your skin is even and in quite good condition . Justi is quite right in her comment in strengthing your strong areas and concealing the bad.I also hugely agree with the others that a good base- ie your moistuiser and cleanser is essential and will help your pores.
If you need a foundation I would agree that a good quality one is worth it as is a good concealer. Lipsticks, pencils and eyeshadows and especailly mascaras can be cheaper ( especailly for starting off ) .
I am the opposite of you instead of starting to wear foundation I have always wore it and am now going for the less is more look. This might be a good idea for yourself until you feel comfortable at wearing make up and also for the people who know you ( nothing worse than a rude remark about looking caked ! becuase someone is just not used to seeing you wearing make up ).
I now just use concealer ( a really good lancome one but I highily recommend diors ) to blot the dodgy bits and then a tranlucent powder to even my skin and stop shine. ( I love estee lauders diffusing powder- it makes your skin ffel soft ) .I sometimes wear mineral foundation but this is not really recommended if you have open pores .
ALWAYS wear mascara it works wonders.
Buy yourself a lovely lipstick as this on its own will really lift your face .Maybe for a treat this will be all that you need and them maybe start to get some free make overs from some counters. Good luck .
