PS The Body Shop used to do fantastic little papers for taking the shine off your nose and chin. Can't remember what they are called, or if they still do them, but you could ask. They are just a book of leaves of paper impregnated with powder...far less obvious than loose or cake powder, which I hate. Matte skin always looks so old - unless you are 17 - the Double Wear and moisturiser makes even older skin look dewy and gorgeous. But everyone gets a greasy nose (!) and even dabbing a tissue will work in an emergency.0

I hope you don't mind me butting in here-only makeup is the one area I feel I actually know quite a bit about-I love it and have worked in the industry for over 20 years now...(eek!)
First of all, make up should not be scary, it's there to make you feel happy and comfortable. NEVER worry about going to any cosmetic counter-trust me, the girls may LOOK scary but generally they are all very nice, honest. (I should know, I was one for 17 years, lol) I am self employed now (selling Virgin Vie cosmetics and doing wedding makeup etc) so I'm still involved in the industry.
As far as spending money is concerned-well, there's things I don't mind spending money on ie. GOOD foundation and mascara but theres things I'm not bothered about (like the newest fashion colours of eyeshadows) Remember, make up is not a tattoo so it will wash off! Never be afraid to try something. I won't go into recommending loads of names because I do find it a very personal thing-ie. I LOVE VV foundation and Estee Lauder as well but I HATE E.L skin care...I love Clarins skincare but hate their makeup! (that's me personally) Lots of people swear by YSL Touche eclat but I know there s other companies that do a better CHEAPER version
It''s like fragrance, everyone likes their own thing. One good thing about either having a VV party is you will get to try everything before you buy, same as going to a counter. A good consultant worth her salt will beg for a chance to sit you down and do a makeover. Half the time I was bored STIFF!
Makeup does not last-I would seriously just bin the old stuff you have a start fresh. All items now have a use by date on them as well (Gov't legislation?)
When you either go to a counter or have a VV/Body shop person do a makeover for you, ask them for tips. NEVER let them try foundation on your hand. You don't wear it there! Go outside and have a look in natural light as well if you can. If they have the facility, ask for a sample. We had to be very careful with that because you are supposed to give a full list of ingredients with samples so we were not allowed to fill up any old pot you brought in, sorry...
I would advise more on makeup if I saw you. As for skin care, make sure who you do eventually speak to asks you loads of qustions like: how does your skin feel in the morning, when/if does it get shiny, what products do you currently use, how do you like to take care of your skin? lifestyle questions like are you outside a lot etc. then they will be able to properly recommend a range of products. If you don't lie them, tell them! (ok, not that I'm pushing VV or anything but everything comes with a 30 money back guarentee)
Good luck and let me kow if you want any more help!
Bunny
ps
Good brushes are worth their weigth in gold. And if you have a VV party this month you get double commission so you could get it all free...How MSE is that!?

I didn't realise you were a VV Rep....I heart VV and just love it. One of my son's friend's Mum is the local Head VV Rep and is always jetting off somewhere. I would have you round every week for a party if you were this way!The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention ~ Anonymous0 -
Thankyou Vashti....darn, The Body Shop in the US still does the blotting paper, but the UK site doesn't seem to have any...(I always thought that you should put powder on top of foundation. I had no idea that you don't need to)

I used to be an air stewardess and as such used to wear thick make up (all part of the job!) I hated the feeling on my skin and since then when I wore makeup would rush to take it off as soon as I got in the house.
I spent years not wearing any much to my mums despair!
I recently discovered mineral makeup and have not looked back since. It changed everything. It is good for your skin, contains natural sun protection and best of all it doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything at all!
It looks flawless too so I wear it every day! And I don't need to retouch it so once it's applied it's not fussy, you just put it on and forget it.
You can get lots of free samples from lili lolo and other companies do free samples too and just get a kibuki brush to apply it and off you go.
Like I said I now wear it every day and I can't ever see myself using anything else now.
I buy mine from a comapny in the States that I found on ebay.
If you don't like the feel of foundation this stuff is the business!0 -
I worked for Dan Air in the good old days - started in the eighties - and it was almost in your contract to have to wear blue eyeshadow to go with the uniform, but no one ever forced us to wear foundation
Then I was with BA until 2006 and they are far more laid back nowadays. In fact, the only people who wear a face full of slap are the 'boys'
The mineral foundation is good, I agree...very light , but it is not great for older skin, as even with the big brush and the 'figure of eight movement' it tends not to get into places like the sides of your nose and that bit in your chin! As those are the places that get a little red and need it most, I still prefer a sheer cream foundation.
I spent a fortune on Bare Eccentuals ID Minerals and brush, and used it once0 -

I used to use these from Crabtree and Evelyn - I think they are the same as the Body Shop ones

I personally find it difficult to recommend colours, foundations etc without seeing someone and feeling their skin-everyone is so different!
I agree with Vashti re. double wear, it is a great foundation but not for everyone as I find it can be a bit drying-I would also mix with a bit of moisturiser but do it on my hand, not in the bottle...
I love the VV OSFB (one step Face base) I used to use Kanebo foundation before I found VV and it was stupidly expensive and not as good as OSFB. I used it whilst I worked for Clarins, Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden and had to lie each time about what foundation it actually was , lol.
As far as tattooing eyebrows in concerend, I'm not too sure about price-my friend paid about £250 I think...may be worth doing a look on the internet!
Glad to help, ask away!

Claudie,
I've been doing VV for nearly 8 years now!

I have terrible skin and have tried every foundation going to get an even skin tone without looking like I used coloured polyfilla.
Thank heavens for Maybelline dream matte mousse- it matches my skin colour perfectly (I'm very pale, typical blueish coloured scot with a slightly red nose!)
When I put it on it just seems to dispappear along with my little thread veins, spots, old freckles etc. I have greasy skin up the middle of my face but it does seem to last a few hours for me (I'm always touching my face, habit that probably makes my spots worse) I use their 'Ivory' colour
It's available in Tesco,Asda etc. so convenient for me too, although I'm only on my second pot in over a year.
for nights out where I want a thicker coating I use little cosmetic sponge wedges to apply it, then it looks even better.
I add a little rose coloured cream blusher to the apples of my cheeks,a little goes a long way, then some pale brown eyeshadow,a meutral lipstick or lipgloss and if it's a night out some mascara.
It makes me look so much better, like I've made a bit of an effort at least:p but it still looks natural, which is the whole point, strangely enough!Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Hi. I would just second vick6525's suggestion that you go to a Benefit counter and get a mini makeover. (Benefit counters are normally in Boots or Debenhams). The staff are lovely; I have always been so awful with makeup (youngest of 4 - 3 older brothers so make up never featured large in my upbringing - climbing trees and being in their gang was the order of the day!) I always felt intimidated by makeup counter staff but the Benefit girls were lovely and their own make up was really natural. I now feel I'm starting to get there with the old face paint thing (I'm 43 tomorrow so it's about time!)
Word of warning though - it is quite expensive! (but I do feel it's worth it.)0 -
Yes..I dilute the double wear in the palm of my hand (you only need a tiny amount) my preferred moisturiser is Olay Total Effects, the one in the pump. It is quite thick, runny moisturiser tends to water it down too much.
Also good for diluting , is Estee Lauder primer, expensive but it lasts forever and gives a lovely sheen, and tones down red skin too
