Santander Select

Anybody else got a letter welcoming them to this "service"?

I wonder what the point is, AFAICS it only offers a relationship manager and nothing else. And the less I interact with bank staff the happier I am. If they are trying to match HSBC Premier, it isn't working as HSBC gives you improved rates / products AND premier in every country you have an HSBC account in.

I only have about £20K in my esaver, which will be leaving in 8 months unless they jack up the rates again. Had more but it went to NS&I and 2x BS ISAs in April. Interestingly, my wife who has much more in her esaver, been a customer for twice as long, and has ISA and credit card as well, did not get "invited" to this.

It's just a letter asking you, in essence, for your permission to be pestered by one of their sales folk (aka "Relationship Manager"), on a continuous basis.

    Whatever turns you on......

But Sanntander's standard rates are higher than HSBC's Premier rates, are they not?

It's just because HSBC are starting out with rock-bottom rates for everyone that they can afford to raise it for some.

Oops, I meant improved rates in other countries, but you're right, HSBC in the UK (premier or otherwise) is no longer useful, especially since Santander has just installed a cash deposit machine near my house
  • Keeping with the HSBC comparison, I'm guessing that Santander Select gives you direct access via the phone to a UK call centre rather than offshore - much like HSBC Premier does.

Some people might see that as a benefit.

They seem to have added a (free) contactless Gold VISA debit card, with a daily limit of £750 for qualifying 123 customers.

I don't need a relationship manager or a gold card, and I don't want to subject myself to endless intrusive fact finding "know your customer" questions, but...

I wonder if they might offer their Select customers exclusive access to a Select product?

    Select ISAs coming soon?

Of course this is just speculation or wishful thinking.

    The latter, I reckon.

Apart from that Gold debit card, I have found absolutely nothing on the Select site that isn't available to everyone else.

I do think, though, that the Select sales folk are more capable (i.e. more irritating and pushy) than the normal Santander sales folk. So be sure you can handle pressure sales tactics before you call. If you are prone to feeling sorry for a salesperson, or know you can't say 'no', better don't engage with them.

Do you have a 123 account for the rates? Conditions apply.

Yes, conditions apply, but I don't think that 'Select' gives you any better deals on any of their offerings, with the exception of the Gold VISA debit card.

My letter said that the conditions to qualify for Select are any of the following
    • pay £5k/[account]mth into a 123 current account, from a non-Santander account
    • have at least £75K in one or more Santander UK current, savings or investment account
    • have a property worth at least £500K with a Santander UK mortgage

Sorry I really meant for the rate as opposed to the esaver.
