So far in this episode he's made a smoked haddock chowder, a mustardy lamb steak and a prawn Thai curry, all from ingredients you'd (genuinely) have in your cupboard or fridge and absolutely no fussiness at all.
If he can make those out of cheddar cheese, baked beans, dried noodles, salad cream, 3 eggs, some sprouting potatoes and mixed herbs..... which is what I've got in my cupboard.... I'd be d4mned impressed.

His recipes are quite normal and don't seem too expensive in general and as said he tends(as far as the TV series goes)uses up what would be seen as leftovers or items that are wasted...that is good but we don't have the kind of shops he frequents here or in the towns nearby, qualitywise and adding the fares/petrol would kill any savings made or might mean it is not worth going there in the first place...

But I do think that he is my favourite "cook" too...and I think he is pretty well as close to how most of us cook or would feel comfortable following his lead and his meals are not too expensive or can be stretched/adapted.

I agree I too watched his programme last night and the lemon cake looked gorgeous, not too sure about thyme in it though.I have read his autobiography and its a jolly good book he comes across as a very nice unassuming chap who would indeed sit down for tea, sympathy and cake with. His personality is just so gentle that I could happily sit and watch his programmes all day.no swearing or jumping around just a complete love of what he does and it comes over when you watch the man at his craft. One of the few really excellant food programmes on t.v.

Well said Jackie. I love food even though I eat less for a variety of reasons and though his meals are simple they are still varied and surprising.

  • Can someone tell me what it was that he put into a container of shop-bought custard to make ice cream? Watched the programme and now I can't remember (was prob too busy looking at HIM...I know, I know). Such a gentle man I think. Didn't he used to work at The Savoy?
    Normal people worry me.
  • Just watching Nigel for the second time on catch up and I am a great fan he has inspired me to get my A*** in to gear and get using things
before I go out and shop.

I have a full store cupboard/fridge/freezer Loads of spices/oils/vinegar(300 cookbooks at least) but not a lot of imagination which is where I hope I can get some from Mr. Slater .

Today We are having left over home made cannelloni with salad and garlic croutons. later in the week I am going to make home made burgers and if there are any left crumble them in to a pasta dish

Coffee is what I think he added?

Yes I think it was the Savoy - he just pitched up there when his dad died I think?

Nigel Slater is always my number 1 choice when I need a bit of "food p@rn", ;) his writing is superb, and watching him gives you that lovely warm glow, as well as a massive appitite.

He needs no clever camera work, no sweary gimmicks, nor does he need to seductivly lick any kitchen utensil - just him and his food... Long may he continue.

Would sell a limb for that kitchen though......

Hobsons Choice It was leftover ground coffee. You have to freeze it for 3 hours, stirring every hour. Easiest ice cream I've ever seen!
