There is an old trick that if you feel cold in the house, step outside for a minute and then come back in, and you will actually feel warmer.
I have actually lived somewhere so cold that in winter I sometimes felt the warmth when I went outside, rather than vice versa!Life is mainly froth and bubble

Me too. Where I am now! It also makes me smile people talk about times gone by with outdoor loos and ice on windows inside....we have had the latter hear too, every winter morning, and we oly removed our outdoor loo this summer. I am really looking forward to an indoors down stairs loo which should go in next week I think!0 -
.
I know that some houses are cold, but nmodern houses are far warmer than when I was a youngster in the sixties - no double glazing, ice INSIDE my bedroom window in the morning (you could even see your breath as you lay in bed), outside loos - you cannot begin to imagine how cold they were.
Yes - brings it all back! Got undressed for bed under the bedclothes, then in the morning, got dressed for school under the bedclothes. Lord knows how we all survived - be we have!:beer:0 -
I don't know if this has been mentioned before but "bodies" (the long or short sleeved t shirt things which fasten with poppers underneath) are great during cold wether, worn over tights and layers of thinner shirts they keep everything together and your back stays warm. They are not easy to find now but i believe Primark do them.0

Thick socks then slipper boots - the kind with the fleecy inside and thick rubber soles. Tight cotton leggings under fleecy pj bottoms also trap a lot of heat.
Oh and I swear by cadbury caramel hot chocolate!! If all else fails!0 -
As well as Aldi, Primark do very cheap thermals. The people in my life: Betty Crocker, Mr. T and Gordon (of Gordon's gin) :T0

I have learned to love slippers, and ugg (nopt real ones). StyleLess but oh so warm and comfortable in a cold house.
And it's a good point about hot drinks. I DO find it harder to keep hydrated when it's cold because it's no fun glugging cold water when you are cold (or when the water freezes by your bed:eek: but hot drinks all day are a key part of keeping warm and satisfied. I often have hot water with a little rosemary tip in it, maybe with some lemon juice.
Even when it's cold, especially wearing layers of fleece, we can dehydrate.0 -
i used thermal insoles from m*talan last yr think they might be these ones:
http://www.matalan.co.uk/fcp/product/fashion-to-buy-online//Insoles/60773&resultsPerPage=100&attrList=Dept,brand and they were great both in slippers and outdoor shoes. you can get real sheepskin ones off amazon for a bit more money. hth0 -
I am surprised nobody has mentioned the varieties of "electric blanket" that can be wrapped round oneself during the day - Aldi/Lidl (we have both within about a hundred yards of each other) have special offers seasonally to sell such items, though remembering you are "plugged in" is a good idea.:D
Electrically heated gloves are a possibility, a rechargeable battery substitute for the "hand warmers" that could be heated up to recharge the chemical reaction after use.
Think motorcyclist and construction worker for budget priced cold weather gear.
Don't forget the bag of seed that can be heated up in the microwave and used as a "lumbar roll".
After all the objective is to keep the person warm not the household ornaments, BUT beware of "The English Diseases" of Bronchitis & TB flourishing in crowded, cold dank damp housing conditions, ventilate for 20 minutes every morning and dry up any condensation (and secondary glaze to reduce it), removing any black mould - we don't want a return of these two killer illnesses.
I do casual driving work from time to time, and the vagaries of weather, customers and traffic mean there is always the danger of needing sleep (driving when falling asleep is as dangerous as driving drunk) So, especially in the winter, travel prepared.
You would be amazed at the number of people in N.France / Low Counties, who emerge on a frosty winter's morning into a snow landscape to shake out a sleeping bag.
Last winter I got caught in an estate car in a blizzard so it was obvious that I would be going nowhere, even with a shovel on board! - so I reversed into a side turning. Ate and drank emergency supplies & made a bed amongst the stuff in the back. Entombed in a white coating it was reasonably snug apart from my toes. So I had a think and realised that I could have available nearly a pint of blood warm liquid - that warmwater bottle did the trick - needs must when the devil drives.
Has anyone tried this "current" offer from Aldi:0
