The big thing is keeping the extremities warm - and not letting them cool down! Hats, socks plus slippers and gloves are good (though I can't help but think of the gloves in a kind of Steptoe way! They will be effective. Hot water bottles are always good and food with Carbohydrates. Another big thing is humidity. If you get damp you will feel colder than being in a cold but dry room so ventilation is important, though you shouldn't feel a breeze whistling past you!
Stay Warm!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
Very useful posts Winnie and Droid. Baby Shoes(OT perhaps but you can't always stay totally on the subject)It always comes back to what the thread is about but straying occasionally allows an insight into our personalities/characters.
I wouldn't over do it but you are right you can't see a face or tone of voice so that's why I sometimes add a smilie...

I get cold feet, literally cold feet, so I wear the big novelty slippers, guiness ones just now. They're lovely and warm and dont actually look that stupid. I also have some fleece socks for when I'm in bed.[STRIKE]Beggars cant be choosers, but savers can![/STRIKE]That used to be the case :mad:0

As a chap I usually go for the "young Seth Armstrong" - fleecy cotton shirt , thick woolly jumper, a pair of cords and thick wool army surplus socks and slippers which seems to work a treat.
In bed its "sunday slob" Tshirt, hoodie , joggers and wooly socks and a big wooly blanket over the duvet0 -
Around the house I wear fleece, I am a huge fleece fan and have been since I bought my first as a young adult ( from the childrens dept of C&A!!!) So about 35 years on and I am converting all and sundry to the joys of fleece.
I wear fleece trousers ( tecnically pyjamas but in plain colours) with matching or contrasting fleece cardigans/jumpers.
I have fleece dressing gowns and many, fleece balnkets which are under the sheets and over the sheets.
The sheets are flannelette and fab as there is no "icy blast" when you jump in on an night!
Flannalette pyjamas are also good to wear around the house, I have even worn them under my jeans OUTSIDE the house, when it has been cold ( keep you super warm, just be sure to tuck them into your socks or make sure they are shorter than your jeans!) I found mine peeping out of the bottom of my jeans when I was in the hairdressers!!! I don't think any one noticed............
Footless tights or leggings under jeans or pyjamas also add a cosy layer.
I have been known to wear a fleece scarf around my neck even in the house as I have short hair and feel the cold around my neck and shoulders.
I have just "converted" to a childrens fleece "onesie" (sp?) I am 5ft 4 and a size 14 and can fit into the age 13 to 14 !!, though I prefer the age 15 to 16 these are slightly longer and this means I don't have to flex my shoulders as much to get out of it for the loo !!! These are so very warm, no gaps/drafts and ok, whilst they are a bit childish ( the design not the concept) I can see myself living in these when home alone ( and not expecting any company).
Hubby says I look cute in them ( though I think I look like an aging todler!!)
M&S also have some mens Fleece joggers in for £15 which is good value.
I would have fleece undies in Winter if there was such a thing!0 -
as sport direct is closing down they have loads of thermals, ski wear, hats, gloves etc really quite cheap. i got some thermal leggings as I umpire rowing and being out next to the river at 7am in the winter can be a bit chilly! At home I am a lot colder than OH and I'm the tight one who doesn't want to turn the heating on/up! pjs, hoody, dressing gown, bed socks, slanky (banket with sleeves so can still do things) and blanket tend to do the job when sat watching tv
but a quick blast of tidying up gets the blood pumping and warms me up!

Thanks for all the tips - didn't know about wrist warmers - will get some if I can find them.
I do a lot of the above, thermal underwear and socks, "day duvet" on the sofa for TV. Just ordered some of those gloves that allow you to use your mobile without taking them off - that's not why I want them - I want to be able to type in them - hope they turn out to be warm as well.
It's actually a really sunny day today - long may it last - but when the freeze is really here I tend to wear all the layers mentioned, and a scarf and wear my dressing gown on top, which has a hood, so I look like a Benedictine monk - but who cares! People walk around in rural Spain in their dressing gowns, so if I have to be European, I might as well join them!0 -
I thnk all of this has been said already, but what helps me when I am working from home and and trying not to have the heating on all day, every day, is:
Fingerless gloves
Thermal socks under slipper socks
A neck warmer (I got mine from Mil*etts) as we get a few draughts coming through the windows-good for condensation but not for my poor neck
A thermal vest. Always.
I rarely wear jeans in the winter and prefer leggings and thick tights -I posted on another thread that I found some fleece lined tights in my local B*yes store.Keep calm and keep crafting :happyhear0 -
Those gloves work pretty well, I use them quite a bit indoors.
Until March we could afford the CH and Mum's pension covered it, people used to say how warm it was. Since then and losing Mum now I do all the above and do all I can to keep the price down but lately I have given in slightly but I am being careful until I see my first bill as I signed up to a plan to try and keep prices lower if there was a chance that they may go up, which they did.
At the risk of repeating myself(sorry if it was on this thread)I cannot plan too far ahead because of all the chages coming but I am on a fixed income and health issues.
But if I can avoid putting the heating on as long as possible, perhaps when it gets really cold I can have it on longer but save some cash. But I hope this may work...
Save money for the winter during the Summer when I use less electric and gas. Then buy my food and build up a store so I shop less and only buy items on offer or that have long dates on them so really my shop will only be mainly fresh fruit and veg, bread and milk.
I hope that will work but I'll just have to see if this works...of late most of the time using all the types on of clothes and tips here, do work."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
