Wait till you try it, you'll be horrified too.
If Bill Gates hadn't been distracted by all the sick children in Africa, he could have put a bit more effort into Windows 8.

I've gone into it with an open mind and must admit I quite like Win 8.
That isn't always my view on Microsoft products. Office 2010 is awful in my opnion. And it's not now a lack of familiarity, the more I use it, the more I hate it.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
  • I would avoid Windows 8 for a while if I were you, there's a reason they are offering it very cheap.

It's very counter-intutive if you have used Windows before. There ARE application incompatibilites you may run into. The only reason I would suggest going to it is if you are still stuck on an old version of XP and even then I would do a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade over the web.

We will all eventually be forced onto Windows 8 (or more likley the patched relase 2 years hence) but if you don't realy need it yet, I wouldn't jump.

Agree it's a bit counter intuitive but less so than the change from 3.1 to 95 and people got used to that quickly. I'll look out for retro compat issues but I did have some with win 7.

Windows 8 is fine, people just hate change, I've used it and had no problem RTM is better than RP and CP, the new Youtube design is a greater learning curve than Win7 to 8.

I'm not saying people should upgrade, in fact if you have Windows 7 which will be supported for many years to come then upgrading may be a waste of £15/£24 after all why bother if Windows 7 works and has support for years to come, but if you do end up using Windows 8 (either buying a new computer or upgrading) it is nowhere near as bad as people are making out, in fact it really isn't bad at all, it's just different, and different does not mean bad.
But saying that if you are still using the security hole filled XP that is pretty much dead since it's support is running out soon I would probably implore you to upgrade or switch OS to something a little more up-to-date and secure.

The true future of Windows (and computers full stop) is a tablet that you can bring home and it becomes your desktop machine, mouse keyboard everything, tablets like the Surface Pro will be very nice with Windows 8, out and about all day surfing the full internet, playing Angry Birds, but come home connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse and you can play proper games, Quake Live, Black Ops, Sims a bit of WoW what ever people play these days, it won't replace a proper gaming PC for ultra high spec games but for the vast majority of the world it's one device that can do everything.

Just installed it last night, fresh, over a Windows 7 install, and it's great. Really impressed with the new interface, and especially the Music app which I was playing with last night. I've got 2 monitors so I'll have the desktop on one and the 'Tiles' on the other for glancing at.
People mourning the loss of the Start button. Really? It's at the bottom left. Move your mouse to the bottom left corner, and click. just like you used to! Or, you know, use the Start key on your keyboard.
Faster startup than 7 at the mo (to be expected I guess) and it actually looks nice whilst installing too.
Apple had a far nicer OSX for a long time, Win7 closed the gap, and now whilst Apple try to turn OSX into iOS, MS have something that really does look good on a 4" screen or a 44" one!

I used this last night to get a £10 discount voucher for Windows 8 Pro. It's for an offer they were doing for people buying new Windows 7 pc's but there's no verification process, so just fill in the gaps and get a free discount code!

    £15 for windows 8 Pro!

How did you do that? what windows key did you input as it rejected me ? Did I do it wrong somewhere?

I have to buy a new laptop, but I'm definitely staying away from windows 8!
I went into a shop yesterday and saw it *live* (rather than just reading about it), and honestly, it looks like it's made for children or people of very limited attention...
"Look, BIG buttons! Look, BRIGHT colours! Look, BIG fonts!" - for goodness sake, I absolutely hate busy screens, and this is nothing but a busy screen, something that might work in tablets or touch screens, but not in real computers. It's completely counter-intuitive.

Plus with of course all the problems that are bound to appear on the introduction phase, I'll choose one with windows 7.

I Paid £25 today, but as I don't want to pay with my time, I am going to keep it on the back burner for a while, Moving to windows 7 was pain but I do like win 7, but win 8 looks like a mobile OS instead of a desktop OS and yes I know that's the direction of things but with all the services linked together and html5 and JS integrated in to the OS you know win8 is a malware authors wet dream come true.
